    The changing requirements of the current cities demand new infrastructural projects; these projects often overlap with urban archaeological sites. The infrastructural projects are endeavored to be completed briskly owing to many financial, political, and sociological factors. Therefore, the required duration for the archaeological heritage research and the time scheduling of the infrastructural projects do not correspond with each other. In this study, on the Beşiktaş Metro Station Excavation and Haydarpaşa Station Area Excavation; the factors affecting the research on cultural heritage in infrastructural projects located in urban archaeological areas were examined; the effects and the results of time pressure and ambitious expectations about the speed of work in infrastructural projects on the preservation of cultural heritage were evaluated.

    Üsküdar'ın Kentsel-mekânsal Dönüşümü Bağlamında Rum Mehmed Paşa Camisi'nin Koruma Sorunları

    Üsküdar, İstanbul'un fethinden itibaren Osmanlı tarafından imar ve iskân faaliyetlerinin yoğun bir biçimde sergilendiği bir bölge olmuştur. Bu faaliyetler sonucu kent, 16.yüzyılın ortasına gelindiğinde, ölçek olarak önemli bir büyüme/genişleme yaşamıştır. Rum Mehmed Paşa Camisi ise inşa edildiği tarihten 17.yüzyılın başına kadar bu gelişmenin odak noktasında yer almıştır. 16.yüzyıl boyunca kente inşa edilen anıtsal ölçekli külliye kompleksleriyle birlikte yapının odak noktası olma hali değişmiş ve buna bağlı olarak önemi de azalmıştır. Bu çalışmada tipik bir Osmanlı kenti olarak tanımlayabileceğimiz Üsküdar'ın, Osmanlı döneminde kentte inşa edilen ilk yapı olan Rum Mehmed Paşa Camisi'nin nasıl bir fonksiyona sahip olduğu anlaşılmaya ve adı geçen yapının süreç içinde maruz kaldığı müdahalelere ile birlikte günümüzde koruma durumunun nasıl olduğu belgelendirilmeye çalışılmaktadır.

    Filling an Urban Void as a ‘public Interior’ in Balıkesir; Contemporary Intervention Into Historic Context Through Interior Space

    The paper argues the role of interior spaces in linking with the urban open space configuration. The interior space is discussed as extensions of urban spaces and urban spaces as extensions of interiors with specific reference to a case study selected in Balıkesir urban fabric. Under the light shed by these discussions, the paper questions the certainty of boundries between exterior and interior, thus between interior design and architecture. While the first axis of discussion focuses on the duality between interior and exterior, the second axis of discussion concentrates on the insertion of new and contemporary architectural and spatial features into an existing and historic context. The Museum and Library of Photography project in Balıkesir, which is selected as case study, is based on a VOID connecting what exists with what disappeared long ago in a totally new combination. Consequently, paper shows that architectural identity of the existing (and sometimes disappeared) heritage is reproduced via injection of this new hybrid (interior-exterior) into the very heart of the existing urban fabric. The hybrid design of the VOID intends to resolve the tensions between the contrasting features of restoration and intervention merely by understanding the conditions and fundementals of the process of historical layering in the town.

    Büyük Valide Han'ın Sosyo-ekonomik ve Kültürel Dönüşüm Sürecinin Tarihi Ekler Üzerinden İrdelenmesi

    İstanbul Tarihi Yarımada'da yer alan Hanlar Bölgesi yüzyıllar boyunca ticaretin merkezi olmuştur. İstanbul'un fethiyle birlikte çok sayıda hanın yapılmasından ötürü bu bölge 'hanlar bölgesi ' olarak bilinmektedir. Hanlar bölgesinde yer alan ve 17. yy'dan günümüze kadar ticaretin en yoğun olduğu hanlardan biri olan Büyük Valide Han yüzyıllar içinde geçirdiği sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel dönüşüm sürecinde avlularına çok sayıda yapısal ek almıştır. Bu ekler hem hanın mimarisine farklı dönemlerde yapılmış olan müdahalelerin birer simgesi, hem de hanın yüzyıllar içerisindeki dönüşümünün izleridir. Bu tez çalışması ile modern mimaride 'ek kavramı' üzerinden yola çıkılarak ele alınan Büyük Valide Han'ın orta avlusunda yer alan eklerin, hanın bütünüyle birlikte nasıl değerlendirileceği ve eklerin nasıl sınıflaandırılacağına dair mimari kriterler önerilmiştir. Han'ın yıllar içindeki sosyo-kültürel değişimi; handaki iş kolları ve bunların sürekliliği de araştırılarak mimari ekler üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir.
