Abstract

In conventional cooperative detection a fusion center decides on the presence or the absence of a primary user (PU) by gathering all the information from secondary users (SUs) and conveys this decision to all users. This approach does not take into account the locations of the SUs where a user far from the PU may also have to keep silent. An alternative method referred to as the combinational cooperative detection method in this study was recently proposed to solve this problem. This method is based on combining received signals from more than two users obtaining decision tables and deciding individually for each user. While the proposed method showed promising results for the SUs there were unclear issues regarding the practical implementation of this method. Motivated by this we address these issues from a realistic implementation point of view in this paper. Accordingly (i) the effects of location and distribution of the SUs on the detection performance are studied in terms of system parameters
(ii) the conventional cooperative detection performance is clearly defined as a benchmark
and (iii) a novel method is developed to improve the combinational cooperative detection performance where the achievable false detection and miss-detection probabilities are quantified. The results of this study are important to define the conditions where the implementation of the combinational cooperative detection method may be preferred over the conventional cooperative detection method.
