While most studies consider the reconstruction of primary user's signal accurately it is indeed more important to analyze the presence or absence of the signal correctly. Furthermore these studies do not consider the achievable lower bounds of reconstruction error and how well the selected method performs correspondingly. Motivated by these issues we investigate in detail the primary user detection performance of Bayesian compressive sensing (BCS) approach in this paper. Accordingly we (i) determine the BCS signal reconstruction performance in terms of mean-square error (MSE) compression ratio and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and compare it with the conventionally used basis pursuit approach (ii) determine how well BCS performs compared with the Bayesian Cramer-Rao lower bound (BCRLB) of the signal reconstruction error and (iii) assess the probability of detection performance of BCS for various SNR and compression ratio values. The results of this study are important for determining the achievable performance of BCS based spectrum sensing.Conference Object Alternative Transducer Power Gain Expression in Broadband Matching Network Designs(IEEE, 2016) Şengül, Metin Y.In this paper a reflection coefficient based transducer power gain expression has been derived which is an alternative to the impedance based expression exists in the literature. One important regulation which is common in all regulatory domains is no harmful interference is created to licensed devices. On the other hand interference between unlicensed devices is not regulated. As a result system designers developed new methods to improve coexistence between TVWS networks. Extended busy tone one of such methods is designed for coexistence between wireless regional area and wireless local area networks based on IEEE 802.22 and 802.11af standards respectively. In this paper we analyse the performance of extended busy tone at different range conditions and verify via simulations under realistic conditions. Our results indicate that the method can reduce interference considerably at intermediate distances and enable networks to operate without a significant reduction in throughput.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Anomaly Detection in Walking Trajectory(IEEE, 2018) Öğrenci, Arif SelçukAnalysis of the walking trajectory and the detection of anomalies in this trajectory, provide important benefits in the fields of health and security. In this work, two methods to detect anomalies in trajectories, are compared. Firstly, an unsupervised method is used where the conformance among trajectories are taken into consideration. Trajectories that deviate from others are qualified as anomalies. Secondly, the points in the trajectories are considered as a time series. Artifical neural networks performing supervised learning based on the backpropagation algorithm are used. The results are compared, and the points to be enhanced are highlighted.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Bayesian Compressive Sensing for Ultra-Wideband Channel Models(IEEE, 2012) Ozgor, Mehmet; Erküçük, Serhat; Cirpan, Hakan AliConsidering the sparse structure of ultra-wideband (UWB) channels compressive sensing (CS) is suitable for UWB channel estimation. Among various implementations of CS the inclusion of Bayesian framework has shown potential to improve signal recovery as statistical information related to signal parameters is considered. In this paper we study the channel estimation performance of Bayesian CS (BCS) for various UWB channel models and noise conditions. Specifically we investigate the effects of (i) sparse structure of standardized IEEE 802.15.4a channel models (ii) signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions and (iii) number of measurements on the BCS channel estimation performance and compare them to the results of l(1)-norm minimization based estimation which is widely used for sparse channel estimation. The study shows that BCS exhibits superior performance at higher SNR regions only for adequate number of measurements and sparser channel models (e. g. CM1 and CM2). Based on the results of this study BCS method or the l(1)-norm minimization method can be preferred over the other for different system implementation conditions.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Beacons for Indoor Positioning(IEEE, 2017) Cay, Elif; Mert, Yeliz; Bahcetepe, Ali; Akyazi, Bugra Kagan; Öğrenci, Arif SelçukThis work aims to develop a system for the tracking and control of elderly or handicapped people in an indoor environment. We have developed both a special box using an Arduino board and a mobile application on Android to determine the location of the target based on the Bluetooth Low Energy signals transmitted by special Beacons which are placed in the area of interest. Both systems are used to determine the position of the person and to monitor any event that would cause an alert. Those events can be a long stay in a fixed position or the entry into pre-defined forbidden zones. The location data will be stored in a database for further processing. Alerts can trigger messages to be sent to local authorities and/or relatives of the people. Measurements and test results are discussed regarding their performance. It is clear that more research and development is necessary for obtaining reliable products.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 5A Broadband Microwave Amplifier Design by Means of Immittance Based Data Modelling Tool(IEEE, 2002) Kilinç, Ali; Pinarbaşi, Haci; Şengül, Metin Y.; Yarman, Sıddık BinboğaIn this paper a practical broadband microwave amplifier design algorithm is introduced utilizing the immittance data-modelling tool. In the course of design first the optimum input and output terminations for the active device are produced employing the real frequency technique. Then these terminations are modelled utilizing the new immittance-modelling tool to synthesize the front-end and back-end matching networks. It is shown that this nonlinear system is capable of suppressing the effect of intersymbol interference (ISI) and the noise at the channel. The architecture is a small-scaled simple CNN containing 9 neurons thus having only 19 weight coefficients. Proposed system is compared with linear transversal filters as well as with a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) based equalizer.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 2Channel Estimation for Mimo-Ofdm Systems in Fixed Broadband Wireless Applications(IEEE, 2007) Karakaya, Bahattin; Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Panayırcı, ErdalSystems employing multiple transmit and receive antennas known as multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems can be used with OFDM to improve the resistance to channel impairments. Thus the technologies of OFDM and MIMO are equipped in fixed wireless applications with attractive features including high data rates and robust performance. However since different signals are transmitted from different antennas simultaneously the received signal is the superposition of these signals which implies new challenges for channel estimation. In this paper we propose a time domain MMSE based channel estimation approach for MIMO-OFDM systems. The proposed approach employs a convenient representation of the discrete multipath fading channel based on the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) orthogonal expansion and finds MMSE estimates of the uncorrelated KL series expansion coefficients. Based on such an expansion no matrix inversion is required in the proposed MMSE estimator. Also the performance of the proposed approach is studied through the evaluation of minimum Bayesian MSE.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Channel Estimation for Sm Systems Over Time-Varying Rayleigh Fading Channels(IEEE, 2014) Acar, Yusuf; Dogan, Hakan; Panayırcı, ErdalThis paper is concerned with the challenging and timely problem of channel estimation for spatial modulated systems in the presence of time varying channels. Recently estimation of channel state information for SM systems is investigated by the recursive least square (RLS) algorithm for slow fading channels. However it is clear that the RLS based receiver will have a performance degradation for fast fading channels. Therefore we developed iterative channel estimation based on detected symbols and curve fitting to track the channel variations for SM systems. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed iterative channel estimation offer substantial performance gains over the RLS channel estimation. In particular a savings of about 4dB is obtained at BER = 10(-7) as compared with RLS based receiver at 150km/h for 2 x 4 single carrier SM systems.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Channel Estimation for Spatial Modulation Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Systems(IEEE, 2015) Acar, Yusuf; Doğan, Hakan; Panayırcı, ErdalA combination of spatial modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SM-OFDM) has been recently proposed for multicarrier systems while assuming the perfect channel state information (P-CSI) available at the receiver. But in practical scenarios the estimation of CSI is crucial in order to detect the transmitted data coherently. In this work(1) a new frame structure and pilot symbol aided channel estimation (PSA-CE) technique with a piecewise linear interpolation is proposed for the SM-OFDM systems operating in the presence of frequency selective channel. Bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed channel estimation technique is then investigated with different channel models such as Typical Urban ( TU) and Rural Urban (RU) for 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). In particular it is shown that the performance with estimated channel came close to that with known channel within 2.3 dB in SNR for BER = 10(-4) for TU channels.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 4Channel Estimation in Underwater Cooperative Ofdm System With Amplify-And Relaying(IEEE, 2012) Şenol, Habib; Panayırcı, Erdal; Erdoğan, Mustafa; Uysal, MuratThis paper is concerned with a challenging problem of channel estimation for amplify-and-forward cooperative relay based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in the presence of sparse underwater acoustic channels and of the correlative non-Gaussian noise. We exploit the sparse structure of the channel impulse response to improve the performance of the channel estimation algorithm due to the reduced number of taps to be estimated. The resulting novel algorithm initially estimates the overall sparse channel taps from the source to the destination as well as their locations using the matching pursuit (MP) approach. The correlated non-Gaussian effective noise is modeled as a Gaussian mixture. Based on the Gaussian mixture model an efficient and low complexity algorithm is developed based on the combinations of the MP and the space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) technique to improve the estimates of the channel taps and their location as well as the noise distribution parameters in an iterative way. The proposed SAGE algorithm is designed in such a way that by choosing the admissible hidden data properly on which the SAGE algorithm relies a subset of parameters is updated for analytical tractability and the remaining parameters for faster convergence Computer simulations show that underwater acoustic (UWA) channel is estimated very effectively and the proposed algorithm has excellent symbol error rate and channel estimation performance.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 6Comparison of Compressed Sensing Based Algorithms for Sparse Signal Reconstruction(IEEE, 2016) Çelik, Safa; Başaran, Mehmet; Erküçük, Serhat; Çırpan, Hakan AliCompressed sensing theory shows that any signal which is defined as sparse in a given domain can be reconstructed using fewer linear projections instead of using all Nyquist-rate samples. In this paper we investigate basis pursuit matching pursuit orthogonal matching pursuit and compressive sampling matching pursuit algorithms which are basic compressed sensing based algorithms and present performance curves in terms of mean squared error for various parameters including signal-tonoise ratio sparsity and number of measurements with regard to mean squared error. In addition accuracy of estimation performances has been supported with theoretical lower bounds (Cramer-Rao lower bound and deterministic lower mean squared error). Considering estimation performances compressive sampling matching pursuit yields the best results unless the signal has a non-sparse structure.Conference Object Complex Event Post Processing for Traffic Accidents(IEEE, 2012) Öğrenci, Arif Selçuk; Öğrenci, Arif SelçukIn this paper we describe a framework for an expert system that tries to predict effects of an accident based on past data using supervised learning employing artificial neural networks. For this purpose sensory data events are post processed in order to generate a reasonable mapping between input and output parameters in case an event is detected automatically or manually. The framework is intended to be used to take actions for reducing the effects of the accident on traffic congestion and to inform necessary parties to intervene in a timely fashion.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Connected Navigation of Non-Communicating Mobile Agents(IEEE, 2012) Kerestecioğlu, Feza; Cezayirli, AhmetThis article discusses the connectivity of autonomous mobile robots that do not have communication capabilities. We show that if the group members follow the proposed Local Steering Strategy which utilizes information only about the relative positions of neighbor robots they can sustain their connectivity even in the case of bounded position measurement errors and the occultation of robots by other robots in the group. To reduce the computational burden in the implementation of the proposed methodology we used sub-optimal solutions. © 2012 IEEE.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Data Detection Based Iterative Channel Estimation for Coded Sm-Ofdm Systems(IEEE, 2016) Acar, Yusuf; Leblebici, M. Merih; Dogan, Hakan; Panayırcı, ErdalThe combination of spatial modulation (SM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as SM-OFDM is a recently proposed efficient modulation scheme with exploiting the index of transmit antenna to convey information bits for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems due to its low complexity feature. The pioneering works assume that the perfect channel state information (P-CSI) or pilot symbols aided channel estimation (PSA-CE) is available at the receiver. The open question is whether the accuracy of pilot based channel estimation is satisfactory to accomplish high data rate transmission in SM-OFDM systems. This paper explores the iterative channel estimation (ICE) problem for the coded SM-OFDM systems. We showed that the quality of the channel estimation can be further enhanced by the detection of symbols at the receiver. Through comparative simulations we show that the proposed ICE method has notable bit error rate (BER) performance compared with the PSA-CE method for the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation over the typical urban (TU) channel model.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Data-Aided Autoregressive Sparse Channel Tracking for Ofdm Systems(IEEE, 2016) Buyuksar, Ayse Betul; Şenol, Habib; Erküçük, Serhat; Cirpan, Hakan AliIn order to meet future communication system requirements channel estimation over fast fading and frequency selective channels is crucial. In this paper Space Alternated Generalized Expectation Maximization Maximum a Posteriori (SAGE-MAP) based channel estimation algorithm is proposed for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems for Autoregressive (AR) modeled time-varying sparse channels. Also an initialization algorithm has been developed from the widely used sparse approximation algorithm Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) since the performance of SAGE algorithm strictly depends on initialization. The results show that multipath delay positions can be tracked successfully for every time instant using the proposed SAGE-MAP based approach.
