Article Citation - WoS: 2Traditional Folklore Forms in Temasa-I Dunya Ve Cefakar U Cefakes(Milli Folklor Dergisi, 2016) Şişmanoğlu Şimşek, ŞehnazTemasa-i Dunya ve Cefakar u Cefakes written by Evangelinos Misailidis in 1871-1872 has widely been considered to be an adaptation of the Greek novel O Polipathis (1839) and its originality has not been adequately emphasized in past studies. This article suggests that Temasa-i Dunya should be considered an original novel since it incorporates traditional folklore forms peculiar to Ottoman literature which are absent in Polipathis. This study first of all describes the variety and the origins of the traditional folklore forms in Temasa-i Dunya and delineates the literary tools by the help of which they were included in the text. Furthermore it analyzes how these elements affect the narrative discourse and the author's purposes in employing them. The analysis demonstrates that in Temasa-i Dunya oral and print culture materials of both Muslim and non-Muslim origins are embedded in the text primarily in the form of narrative digressions and digressions from the frame story. These digressions carry the marks of the traditional story teller both in terms of functionality and at the discursive level. In other words Misailidis' narrator being an active subject similar to the story teller in the oral culture chooses and manipulates the appropriate traditional story in accordance with the messages he conveys to the Karamanli readership. It can also be said that unrealistic features of traditional stories are eliminated and the stories are presented in a realistic style and content. Moreover the aforementioned narratives help to overcome the limited perspective of the first person narrative and to portray a variety of experiences. Temasa-i Dunya also presents a folkloric panorama of 19th century Istanbul through numerous idioms and proverbs.Book Part Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 6Determinants of Corporate Cash Holdings: Firm Level Evidence From Emerging Markets(Springer, 2017) Akben Selçuk, Elif; Altiok-Yilmaz, AyseThe objective of this chapter is to investigate the factors affecting corporate cash holdings in five emerging markets namely Brazil Indonesia Mexico Russia and Turkey. The sample consists of 1991 firms listed on the major stock exchange of their countries and covers the period between 2009 and 2015. The model is estimated by Arellano–Bond dynamic generalized method of moments. Results show that firms which use higher leverage in their capital structure hold more cash. More profitable firms are shown to have higher levels of cash holdings. Another variable which has a positive effect on the level of cash holdings in any given period is the level of cash holdings in the previous period as shown by the positive and significant coefficient of the lagged dependent variable in the model. Liquidity and firm size have a negative and statistically significant impact on the level of corporate cash holdings. Firms with higher level of capital expenditures are also shown to hold less cash. Design/methodology/approach: Using panel data on Turkish firms listed on the Borsa Istanbul 100 index for 2006–2014 three models are estimated. For the first two models where the dependent variables are the dividend payout ratio and dividend yield respectively tobit regressions are run. The last model which employs a dividend dummy as the dependent variable is estimated with logistic regression. Findings: There is a positive and concave relationship between family ownership and dividends. The existence of a family chairman reduces dividends. There is a positive association between board size and dividends and this relationship is weaker for firms with higher levels of family ownership. Finally the ratio of independent directors on the board is negatively associated with dividends. Practical implications: The findings imply that firms with substantial family ownership and active family participation in management are more likely to send a negative signal to minority shareholders by paying lower dividends. In addition minority shareholders should pay attention to the board structure of firms in which they invest. Originality/value: This study is one of the few to analyze the nonlinear relationship between family ownership and dividend payments as well as the role of family management in a developing country. Second it investigates the role of board characteristics in explaining dividend payment decisions. © 2019 Emerald Publishing Limited.Article The “karakoncolos/kalikancaros” belief in Turkish and Greek sources [Türkçe ve yunanca kaynaklarda karakoncolos/kalikancaros inancı](Milli Folklor Dergisi, 2018) Şişmanoğlu Şimşek, ŞehnazThe belief in “karakoncolos/kalikancaros” is seen in a wide geography spreading from Central Anatolia and Black Sea region in Turkey to Balkan Peninsula including Greece Bulgaria and Serbia. Though karakoncolos is defined under different names in Turkish sources the period it is depicted and its features are almost similar. According to this the karakoncolos believed to have emerged on the coldest days of the year is depicted as a creature that is often hairy resembling animal haunting people and disturbing them. One of the first written sources in Turkish that included the belief in karakoncolos is Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatnâme. Today it is rarely a tradition in games such as “karakoncilo” in the Eastern Black Sea or a belief that has been almost forgotten or even unknown by the majority even though it continues to exist as a trivial image in Turkish literature and cinema. On the other hand this belief often referred to as kalikancaros in Greek was compiled by the folklorist Nikolaos Politis at an early date (1904). In this study first of all referring to the various beliefs concerning kalikancaros in the mentioned compilations of Politis the rewritings of them in the present Greek children’s literature by Filippos Mandilaras will be introduced. In today’s Greece it will be revealed that especially during the Christmas period it continues to exist as a popular figure of the musical performances in schools and in children’s books. When we have a look at the Turkish and Greek compilations of this belief in general which is spread over a wide geographical area we can see that the reviewed Turkish sources are mostly collected from the Eastern Black Sea region and rarely lived as an almost forgotten tradition. Today in Greece also due to the Velloudios’ paintings which still circulate today the mentioned belief continues to exist as a “national” and a popular element of the childrens’ literature. © 2019 Milli Folklor Dergisi. The literature commonly associates religion and ideology with anti-capitalism and anti-consumption. Although consumer researchers have studied both topics examination of whether materialistic values translate into status consumption and whether religiosity has an effect on the relationship between status consumption and consumer attitude to debt remains scant. Design/methodology/approach - This paper investigates the relationship of materialism to status consumption and the mediating role of Islamic religiosity on the relationship between status consumption and attitude to debt. Structural equations modeling was used on a judgmental sample of 267. Findings - The results showed that the materialistic values positively affect status consumption for the Islamists. This paper concludes that Islamic religiosity not only does not reject consumption but also augments the relationship between status consumption and consumer attitude to debt. Originality/value - The findings have shown that previous studies that identify Islam as a threat to consumerism have overseen the class struggles and the role of status consumption. This paper successfully provided empirical evidence that the religiosity not only does not reject consuming but intensifies the relationship between status consumption and attitude to debt for those with Islamist dispositions.Article The Relationship Between Muslim Religiosity Price-Value Consciousness Impulsive Buying Tendency and Post-Purchase Regret: a Moderation Analysis(Bilgesel Yayincilik San & Tic Ltd, 2014) Akarsu, Tuğra Nazlı; Yeniaras, VolkanReligion has been considered an inseparable part of culture. There is a considerable amount of research examining the relationship between religious affiliation and consumer behavior. Although past studies have confirmed that the religiosity and religious affiliation has an influence on consumers' consumption patterns scholars have focused on some specific aspects of consumer behavior such as shopping orientation media usage or purchasing behavior. To contribute new dimensions into the consumer behavior literature this study makes an attempt to examine how price and value consciousness effects: (1) impulsive buying tendency and (2) post-purchase regret regarding the transaction given Muslim religiosity via the use of moderation analyses in the specifics of a well-known religious congregation. To test the hypotheses the structural equation modeling was used to analyze data obtained from a judgmental sample of 235. Results demonstrated that religiosity has a statistically significant moderating effect on impulsive buying tendency and post-purchase regret.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Alone but Together Autonomous but Related: Self-Construal Effects on Happiness in Social Experiences(Wiley, 2018) Merdin-Uygur, Ezgi; Hesapci, OzlemCommunal tables and open workspaces have become popular servicescapes that is contemporary spaces for experiencing dining or working alone but together. Previous research demonstrates that experiencing with close others (e.g. with friends or family) increases happiness and satisfaction but experiences shared with strangers in contexts such as communal tables or workshops have not yet been thoroughly analyzed. Addressing this research gap from a social-psychological perspective we suggest that even though individuals are generally happier when they share experiences with loved ones self-construal plays a moderating role in the relationship. Individuals with high autonomy and high relatedness do not anticipate greater happiness from experiences shared with friends than with those shared with strangers. Three experimental studies (two online and one field) demonstrate this effect using different operationalizations of autonomy relatedness. This study suggests that a new elite with explicitly Islamist dispositions is being constructed in Turkey and aims to provide evidence that these elites build their identity through consumption that reflects its newfound status which leads to impulsive buying. This paper investigates the relationship of materialism to impulsive buying and the mediating role of status consumption on this association. To analyse whether the new elites differ from the general public in their consumption preferences two sets of data were collected from a judgmental sample of 267 individuals with explicit Islamist dispositions and a stratified random sample of 413. The results provide empirical evidence to suggest that motivated by materialistic values the explicitly Islamist individuals with high status consumption tendencies are likely to buy products/services impulsively.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 7Corporate Governance and Tunneling: Empirical Evidence From Turkey(Economics Bulletin, 2018) Akben Selçuk, Elif; Sener, PınarThis study investigates whether internal governance mechanisms affect tunneling through intercorporate loans for a sample of Turkish listed non-financial firms over the period 2006 to 2014. While the findings reveal a significant and positive relationship between state ownership and tunneling and a significant and negative relationship between foreign ownership and tunneling the relationship between family ownership and tunneling is non-linear. In addition while board size is negatively associated with tunneling independent directors do not prevent the embezzlement of resources. In particular, the consumption of red meat is associated with sustainability issues. Replacing meat with plant-based meat substitutes offers a useful way of reducing the burden that meat consumption places on the environment and dealing with issues regarding animal welfare. However, consumer acceptance of such products is low in some countries. The purpose of this paper is to clarify consumer attitudes toward meat substitutes and discuss them from a marketing perspective. The findings of this study, which are based on content analyses of web forums in Turkey, indicate that negative consumer perceptions can be categorized into three main dimensions: unhealthy, unusual, and tasteless. The paper specifically investigates an under researched aspect of EL - "connectorship" - with focus on developing a measure for connectorship. The authors present the conceptual framework for EL, followed by the operationalization of "connectorship" construct. Design/methodology/approach - The paper focusses on developing a measure for connectorship using data from a qualitative study of 18 senior managers followed by a survey of 458 managers in Canada. Findings - Content analyses of qualitative data led to the generation of 93 items measuring connectorship. Based on these items, quantitative analyses of survey data from 453 respondents yielded a final measure of connectorship, which consisted of 28 items explored under eight dimensions. Research limitations/implications - An organization's emphasis on connectedness and engagement of leaders will improve knowledge sharing and better mutual understanding of organizational issues among managers. It will also help attain employment stability and decrease hiring and related costs by reducing turnover. Future research, specifically longitudinal studies of leaders at various organizational levels, could incorporate connectorship as a key criterion for leadership effectiveness. Practical implications - The focus on connectorship skills implies that in organizations the emphasis should go beyond traditional leadership skills development and included the neglected connectorship skills development. Increased connectedness and engagement among leaders will have positive performance implications. Social implications - For effective corporate citizenship, the EL framework and a focus on connectorship would help leaders better understand the importance of social networks, be aware of their own network, and improve their skills in connecting the people within their networks. Design/methodology/approach - The integration of SERVQUAL into QFD has been used to set the success factors to improve quality in the textile industry. One of the largest textile companies in Turkey provided the sample. A SERVQUAL-type of questionnaire was used and a total of 32938 questionnaires were distributed both manually and online 24551 usable were received comprising a response rate of 77.31 percent. Findings - Findings of the QFD application suggest internal customer focus as having the highest weight score of almost 12 percent improvement. In addition improvements in technical requirements of politeness and process communication have a 9 percent impact each on internal customer satisfaction criteria. Research limitations/implications - QFD technique is able to provide companies with a better understanding of internal customer expectations and translate these into appropriate service specifications and perform existing process assessment. For the purpose of this study a company is classified as diversified when it is operating in two or more lines of business defined by the two-digit SIC codes. Design/methodology/approach - Employing panel data from 1568 companies for the period 2005-2010 this paper estimates both a fixed effects model and a dynamic generalized method of moments model. Data are collected both at company level and segment level within each firm. Findings - Overall analysis results suggest that for the period from 2005 to 2010 diversified firms in emerging markets are valued more compared to single-segment firms operating in similar industries providing support for diversification premium. Originality/value - The effect of diversification on company value in emerging markets is an important managerial and public policy concern. Although the literature on developed country diversified firms is rich only a few studies have examined diversification-value relationship in the context of developing countries. Furthermore most previous research on the value effects of corporate diversification in emerging markets has taken the form of case studies within countries and concentrated on the 1990s.
