Article Citation - WoS: 38Does Firm Age Affect Profitability? Evidence From Turkey(Int Inst Social & Economics Sciences-IISES, 2016) Akben Selçuk, ElifThe objective of this study is to investigate the impact of firm age on the profitability of Turkish firms listed on Borsa Istanbul. Using a dataset covering the years between 2005 and 2014 and consisting of 302 non-financial firms per year on the average a fixed effects model with robust standard errors is estimated. Results reveal that there is a negative and convex relationship between firm age and profitability measured by return on assets return on equity or gross profit margin. This suggests that younger firms start to see a decline in their profitability from the beginning but they may become profitable again at an old age. Implications are provided.Article Factors Affecting Financial Consumers' Private Pension Plan Decisions: a Literature Review and a Conceptual Framework Proposal(Ali Çağlar Çakmak, 2016) Aydın, Aslı Elif; Akben Selçuk, ElifThe objective of this study is to propose a framework related to financial consumers’ private pension plan decisions. Specifically, we review the factors affecting consumers’ participation, contribution and asset allocation decisions regarding private pensions. The factors discussed include situational and dispositional factors, personality, motivation, financial literacy, and external influences. Based on this survey of literature, we develop a number of propositions, which are expected to benefit individual retirement planners and pension institutions in gaining a better understanding of retirement saving decisions.Article Citation - WoS: 84Unpacking the Relationship Between Sales Control and Salesperson Performance: a Regulatory Fit Perspective(Amer Marketing Assoc, 2018) Katsikeas, Constantine S.; Auh, Seigyoung; Spyropoulou, Stavroula; Mengüç, BülentThe literature examining the effect of sales control on salesperson performance is at best equivocal. To reconcile inconsistencies in empirical findings this research introduces two new types of salesperson learning: exploratory and exploitative learning. Drawing on regulatory focus theory the authors conceptualize exploratory learning as promotion focused and exploitative learning as prevention focused and find that salespeople exhibit both exploratory and exploitative learning though one is used more than the other depending on the type of sales control employed. The results also suggest that the fit between salesperson learning type customer characteristics (i.e. purchase-decision-making complexity) and salesperson characteristics (i.e. preference for sales predictability) is critical to salesperson performance and that salesperson learning mediates the relationship between sales control and salesperson performance (Study 1). Study 2 corroborates the findings using new panel data collected over two waves. The results of this research have important implications for integrating sales control salesperson learning and salesperson performance.Article Citation - Scopus: 18Quality of Health Care and Patient Satisfaction: an Exploratory Investigation of the 5qs Model at Turkey(2010) Akdag, Hatice Camgöz; Zineldin, MosadPurpose - The aim of this research is to examine the major factors affecting patients' perception of cumulative satisfaction and to address the question whether patients in Istanbul evaluate quality of health care to be similar or different to that of the Kazakhstani Egyptian and Jordanian patients. Design/methodology/approach - A conceptual model including behavioural dimensions of patient-physician relationships and patient satisfaction has been used for approach. As the empirical research setting this study concerns people who are or were patients once in Istanbul hospitals. Findings - The questionnaire was taken from another research regarding Egyptian and Jordanian medical clinics. The same research was also done by the authors in Kazakhstan in 2008. A total of 48 items (attributes) of the newly developed five quality dimensions (5Qs) by the second author were identified to be the most relevant. Practical implications - The results of this study can be used by the hospitals to reengineer and redesign creatively their quality management processes and the future direction of their more effective health care quality strategies. Originality/value - A 5Qs model to measure the patients' satisfaction of medical care is proposed as for previous studies for Kazakhstanian Egyptian and Jordanian hospitals. As mentioned previously the 5Qs model encompasses technical functional interaction infrastructure and the atmosphere qualities and services. The results can be used by the hospitals to reengineer and redesign creatively their quality management processes and the future direction of their more effective health care quality strategies. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Product Improvement With Quality Function Deployment (qfd) Technique(Trans Tech Publications Ltd, 2012) Akdag, Hatice Camgöz; Zaim, Selim; Acar, Mehmet F.; Demirel, Omer F.; Ataman, AhmetThe purpose of this paper is to improve a new part for the natural gas sector using Quality Function Deployment (QFD) technique. QFD methodology was chosen for the product improvement process at IGDAS (Istanbul natural gas distribution company) the biggest natural gas distribution firm in Turkey. Experts from engineers were selected to determine customer expectations. Application of QFD to pipe strangling equipment is described step by step. The results show that when developing a new product or improving a product both customer expectations and product requirements are evaluated at the same time pleasing both parties for a successful result.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 11Revenue Management With Minimax Regret Negotiations(Pergamon-Elsevıer Scıence Ltd, 2016) Ayvaz Çavdaroğlu, Nur; Kachani, Soulaymane; Maglaras, CostisWe study the dynamic bilateral price negotiations from the perspective of a monopolist seller. We first study the classical static problem with an added uncertainty feature. Next, we review the dynamic negotiation problem, and propose a simple deterministic "fluid" analog. The main emphasis of the paper is in analyzing the relationship of the dynamic negotiation problem and the classical revenue management problems; and expanding the formulation to the case where both the buyer and seller have limited prior information on their counterparty valuation. Our first result shows that if both the seller and buyer are bidding so as to minimize their maximum regret, then it is optimal for them to bid as if the unknown valuation distributions were uniform. Building on this result and the fluid formulation of the dynamic negotiation problem, we characterize the seller's minimum acceptable price at any given point in time. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Using mainly Gerard Genette's the oretical framework and narratological concepts it can be said that Misailidis has significantly transformed Polipa this semantically especially in terms of time space and closure in then arrative. Hence this study also focuses on the problem of there writing of a text using varied writing strategies. Finally this article claims that as it contains various writing strategies as well as newnarrativepossibilities Dunya is an original novel that reveals the multilingual Ottoman world and Ottoman literature in then ineteenth century.Article Diffusion of Pure and Hybrid Forms of a Practice: Language of Instruction in Turkish Universities, 1983-2014(Wiley Periodicals, Inc, 2020) Topaler, Başak; Üsdiken, BehlülIt is well recognized in the literature that practice variation is an integral part of diffusion processes. What remains less explored is the emergence of distinct forms of a novel practice and the interdependencies in their diffusion. In this study, we make a distinction between the pure version of a practice and ensuing hybrid variants and investigate how diffusion processes unfold for these alternative practice forms. Our empirical investigation in the Turkish higher education field demonstrates that hybrid practice forms became viable alternatives to the pure version of instruction in English and diffused in an interdependent manner. Further, diffusion of pure and hybrid forms was uneven across private and public universities. Our study contributes to the diffusion and practice variety literature as we establish that multiple versions of a practice that diffuse concurrently in a field may be building on or hampering each other, and they may diffuse in fragmented ways across different sub-populations.Editorial Capital Markets Trade Openness and Productivity in Emerging Economies Introduction(M.E Sharpe Inc., 2011) Bilgin, Mehmet Hüseyin; Danis, Hakan[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 21Financial Literacy Among Turkish College Students: the Role of Formal Education, Learning Approaches, and Parental Teaching(Ammons Scientific Ltd, 2014) Akben Selçuk, Elif; Altıok-Yılmaz, AyşeThis study assessed financial literacy and its correlates among Turkish college students with special emphasis on the role of formal education learning approaches and parental influences. Financial literacy was measured by the College Student Financial Literacy Survey which assesses knowledge in four areas: general financial management saving and borrowing insurance and investing. 853 Turkish university students were administered the survey (416 men 437 women ; M age = 20.3 yr. SD = 0.6). The mean percentage of correct responses was 45% (SD = 12.8%). Regression results showed that formal finance education in college a deep approach to learning and direct financial teaching by parents were significantly associated with higher financial literacy scores.Article Considerations and Confusions About Theregulatory Focus Theory and a Future Agendafor Researchers in Marketing(Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, 2017) Merdin-Uygur, EzgiThe regulatory focus theory is the mark of a paradigm shift away from a unidimensional hedonism towards a multiplicity of regulatory foci. It possesses great explanatory power; however a lot remains unresolved despite a promising body of empirical work. This paper highlights various considerations concerning the conceptual and comparative qualities of the regulatory focus theory. The discussion moves into the intersection of regulatory focus and consumer behavior literature, briefly summarizing the findings and followed by a number of propositions to be tested for future research.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 17A Search for Missing Links: Specifying the Relationship Between Leader-Member Exchange Differentiation and Service Climate(Sage Publications Inc, 2016) Auh, Seigyoung; Bowen, David E.; Aysuna, Ceyda; Mengüç, BülentWe search for missing links in how the different social exchange relationships employees have with supervisors (i.e. leader-member exchange [LMX] differentiation) affect their unit service climate perceptions. Drawing on a social comparison perspective we propose a model in which the different relationships service employees establish with supervisors negatively impact unit service climate through elevated unit relationship conflict. We further suggest that unit relationship conflict plays a mediating role as customer variability increases. Using data from head nurse-nurse relationships in 56 units of two major hospitals our findings support the proposed linkages as well as reveal that employee perceptions of customer variability strengthen the troublesome positive link between LMX differentiation and unit relationship conflict. The results also indicate that unit relationship conflict mediates the relationship between LMX differentiation and unit service climate when customer variability is high but not low. Our results paint a more nuanced picture of the missing link in the leadership-climate interface by studying the dark side of leadership a perspective that has yet to receive much scholarly attention. Findings reveal that managers who desire to keep relationship conflict in check need to keep LMX differentiation to a minimum especially when customer variability is high compared to low.Article Citation - WoS: 64Citation - Scopus: 79Service Employee Burnout and Engagement: the Moderating Role of Power Distance Orientation(Springer, 2016) Auh, Seigyoung; Mengüç, Bülent; Spyropoulou, Stavroula; Wang, FatimaStudies show that service employees are among the most disengaged in the workforce. To better understand service employees' job engagement this study broadens the scope of the job demands-resources (JD-R) model to include power distance orientation (PDO). The inclusion of PDO enriches the JD-R model by providing a key piece of information that has been missing in prior JD-R models: employees' perceptions of the source of job demands (i.e. supervisors) or employees' views of power and hierarchy within the organization. Study 1 uses a survey-based field study to show that employees with a high (compared to low) PDO feel more burnout due to supervisors when they are closely monitored by their supervisors. Study 1 further supports the finding that employees with high (compared to low) PDO feel less disengagement despite burnout due to supervisors. Study 2 using a lab experiment and Study 3 relying on a survey-based field study unveil why these effects were observed. Stress and job satisfaction emerge as mediators that explain the findings from Study 1. Implications of the role of PDO are discussed to improve the current understanding of how job engagement can improve customer service performance.Article Ürün Tercihlerini Etkileyen Ambalaj Tasarım Faktörlerinin Kısmi Yarar Konjoint Analizi İle Belirlenmesi: Organik Sabun Ürünü Üzerine Bir Çalışma(Adem Anbar, 2019) Kiygi Calli, MeltemBu çalışmanın amacı farklı ambalaj tasarımlarının tüketici satın alma niyetine olan etkilerini ortaya koymak ve bu etkinin hangi ambalaj tasarımı için en fazla olduğunu belirlemektir. Drawing on the job demands-resources model, this research explicates the mediating process by which CP variation affects customer service performance and its boundary conditions. Study 1 uses data from a field study in the banking industry to show that CP variation negatively influences customer service performance through greater customer-related burnout. The authors show that this mediation process is moderated by contingencies that mitigate or exacerbate the indirect relationship. Study 2 further validates the CP variation construct by testing for discriminant validity against similar and related constructs, such as CP quality, in more diverse service industries (insurance, legal consulting, travel and tourism, health care, and physical fitness). Finally, an examination of the moderating role of CP quality provides a more nuanced picture of the intricacies between CP variation and CP quality. This article concludes with a discussion of the theoretical and practical implications for CP variation research. Article Citation - WoS: 24Citation - Scopus: 30Frontline Employee Feedback-Seeking Behavior: How Is It Formed and When Does It Matter?(Sage Publications Inc, 2019) Auh, Seigyoung; Mengüç, Bülent; İmer, Havva Pınar; Uslu, AyparThis research comprises two studies that extend the literature on the proactive behavior of feedback seeking. Study 1 uses cross-sectional data from frontline employees across 51 apparel stores to examine how feedback seeking is formed and under what conditions. The results suggest that the development of feedback-seeking behavior is contingent on a feedback-seeking climate and the relationship between an employee and his or her supervisor. Study 2 uses longitudinal data collected across three time periods from multiple respondents (i.e. frontline employees and managers) not only to replicate the findings from Study 1 but also to explore when feedback seeking matters. The findings reveal that managers should target employees who are less (vs. more) satisfied with their jobs because such employees perceive more instrumental value from feedback as a means to improve customer service and sales performance. The findings from this research provide insights that managers can use to increase feedback-seeking behavior from employees and effectively identify and manage the conditions under which feedback seeking will occur to greater or lesser degrees.Article Citation - WoS: 5Uncovering the Relationship Between Materialism Status Consumption and Impulsive Buying: Newfound Status of Islamists in Turke(Univ Babes-Bolyai, 2016) Yeniaras, VolkanIslam is often associated with anti-consumerism. This study suggests that a new elite with explicitly Islamist dispositions is being constructed in Turkey and aims to provide evidence that these elites build their identity through consumption that reflects its newfound status which leads to impulsive buying. This paper investigates the relationship of materialism to impulsive buying and the mediating role of status consumption on this association. To analyse whether the new elites differ from the general public in their consumption preferences two sets of data were collected from a judgmental sample of 267 individuals with explicit Islamist dispositions and a stratified random sample of 413. The results provide empirical evidence to suggest that motivated by materialistic values the explicitly Islamist individuals with high status consumption tendencies are likely to buy products/services impulsively.Article Citation - WoS: 34Citation - Scopus: 49Factors Affecting Firm Competitiveness: Evidence From an Emerging Market(MDPI, 2016) Akben Selçuk, ElifThe objective of this study is to investigate the factors affecting firm competitiveness in an emerging marketTurkey. In the paper competitiveness is proxied by a firm's financial performance. The empirical analysis is based on firms listed on Borsa Istanbul and covers the period between 2005 and 2014. Results from a firm-level panel data model indicate that return on assets is positively related to firm size international sales liquidity and growth and negatively related to leverage and R&D expenditures. On the other hand gross profit margin is positively related to size and international sales and negatively related to leverage and R&D expenditures. Finally results show that Tobin's Q ratio is higher for firms with higher levels of debt and higher liquidity levels.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Political Will, Political Skill, Network Resources and Personal Reputation: a Serial Two-Mediator Model(Sciendo, 2020) Demirbağ, Orkun; Demir, Hale; Yozgat, UğurPurpose: Although social capital and positive reputation in organizations are essential for career success, there is a limited perspective in the literature on the political characteristics (motivation and ability) that enable one to acquire and develop the two elements. This study seeks to investigate the sequential role of political skill and network resources as serial mediators of the political will-personal reputation relationship. Methodology: In total, what provided data for the study were 457 sales executives from 13 different sectors in the cities of Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Bursa, which is an economically leading region of western Turkey. Executives rated their political will, political skill network resources, and personal reputation. Based on the complementary theories of political influence, social network, and signaling, we analyzed the relationships between constructs with structural equation modeling. Findings: Political skill mediated the relationship between political will and network resources, network resources mediated the relationship between political skill and personal reputation, while political skill and network resources sequentially mediated the relationship between political will and personal reputation. Implications: The data were collected from a single source. Practical Implications: Political will, political skill training, and social networks may help individuals manage their personal reputation at work, thus benefiting their careers. Originality/Value: This is one of the first studies to sequentially investigate how individuals' characteristics (motivation and ability) develop their social network and personal reputation at work. Moreover, theories of political influence, social capital, and signaling were jointly used for the first time ever.
