Yet most of what we know regarding public opinion on energy comes from North America and Europe. This paper presents the results from the 2016 Turkish Public Preferences for Energy Survey which included 1204 respondents and examined Turkish residents' household energy consumption energy policy preferences and environmental concerns. The main findings were that Turkish citizens consider natural gas and electricity highly expensive view dependence on imported energy as Turkey's most pressing energy challenge and recognize the problem of climate change. This lends public support for wind and solar power but at the same time energy issues and the environment policies of political parties do not affect voting choices and political preferences.Article Citation - WoS: 44Citation - Scopus: 51Hourly Electricity Demand Forecasting Using Fourier Analysis With Feedback(Elsevıer, 2020) Yükseltan, Ergün; Yücekaya, Ahmet; Bilge, Ayşe HumeyraWhether it be long-term, like year-ahead, or short-term, such as hour-ahead or day-ahead, forecasting of electricity demand is crucial for the success of deregulated electricity markets. The stochastic nature of the demand for electricity, along with parameters such as temperature, humidity, and work habits, eventually causes deviations from expected demand. In this paper, we propose a feedback-based forecasting methodology in which the hourly prediction by a Fourier series expansion is updated by using the error at the current hour for the forecast at the next hour. The proposed methodology is applied to the Turkish power market for the period 2012-2017 and provides a powerful tool to forecasts the demand in hourly, daily and yearly horizons using only the past demand data. The hourly forecasting errors in the demand, in the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) norm, are 0.87% in hour-ahead, 2.90% in day-ahead, and 3.54% in year-ahead horizons, respectively. An autoregressive (AR) model is also applied to the predictions by the Fourier series expansion to obtain slightly better results. As predictions are updated on an hourly basis using the already realized data for the current hour, the model can be considered as reliable and practical in circumstances needed to make bidding and dispatching decisions.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Efficient Approaches for Furnace Loading of Cylindrical Parts(Elsevier Science Inc, 2014) Osman, Mojahid Saeed; Ram, Bala; Samanlıoğlu, FundaThis paper addresses the heat treatment operation in a manufacturing plant that produces different types of cylindrical parts. The immediate prior process to heat treatment is furnace-loading where parts are loaded into baskets. The furnace-loading process is complex and involves issues relating to geometry and heterogeneity in the parts and in their processing requirements. Currently furnace-loading is accomplished by operator ingenuity ; consequently the parts loaded in heat treatment often do not use furnace capacity adequately. Efficiency in furnace operation can be achieved by improving basket utilization which is determined by the furnace-loading process. This paper describes the development of integer and mixed integer LP models for 3D loading of cylindrical parts into furnace baskets. The models consider the exact location of parts to be loaded on the basket and incorporate three models with different objectives ; the first addresses the nesting of parts within one another the second addresses the number of basket layers used and the third addresses the number of baskets used. We present a general mechanism for enhancing the effectiveness of such heuristics based on a two-level genetic algorithm. The higher-level algorithm searches in the space of possible merge lists which are then used by the lower-level saving-based algorithm to build the solution. We describe the general framework and we illustrate its application to three hard combinatorial problems. Experimental results on three hard combinatorial optimization problems show that the approach is very effective and it enables considerable enhancement of the performance of saving-based algorithms. Most of these tools require a properly selected matching network topology with good initial element values. Therefore in this paper a practical method is presented to generate matching networks with initial element values. In the implementation process of the proposed method first the driving point immitance data for the matching network is obtained in a straight forward manner without optimization. Then it is modeled as a realizable bounded-real input reflection coefficient which in turn yields the desired matching network with reasonable element values. Eventually the initial design is improved by optimizing the performance of the matched system employing the commercially available computer-aided design (CAD) packages. An example is given to illustrate the utilization of the proposed method. Detailed analysis of binding sites and specific interactions are carried out based on ensemble dockings to multiple receptor conformers obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. In TcTIM dimer dockings the inhibitors preferentially bind to the tunnel-shaped cavity formed at the interface of the subunits whereas non-inhibitors mostly choose other sites. In contrast TcTIM monomer binding interface and hTIM dimer interface do not present a specific binding site for the inhibitors. These findings point to the importance of the tunnel and of the dimeric form for inhibition of TcTIM. Specific interactions of the inhibitors and their sulfonate-free derivatives with the receptor residues indicate the significance of sulfonate group for binding affinity and positioning on the TcTIM dimer interface. Herein we report the design synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of 1-phenyl/1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl) ethanol esters. Many of these derivatives showed fungal growth inhibition at very low concentrations. Minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) value of 15 was 0.125 mu g/mL against Candida albicans. Additionally some of our compounds such as 19 (MIC: 0.25 mu g/mL) were potent against resistant C. glabrata a fungal strain less susceptible to some first-line antifungal drugs. We confirmed their antifungal efficacy by antibiofilm test and their safety against human monocytes by cytotoxicity assay. To rationalize their mechanism of action we performed computational analysis utilizing molecular docking and dynamics simulations on the C. albicans and C. glabrata CYP51 (CACYP51 and CGCYP51) homology models we built. The objective is to minimize the total unloaded miles traveled by the trucks. In this paper a simulated annealing - a meta-heuristic optimization method - that interacts with a deterministic simulation model of the log transport system in which the precedence and temporal relations among activities are explicitly accounted for is proposed. The results obtained by solving a small size problem consisting of four trucks two mills three loggers and four truck trips showed that the best solution could be found in less than two minutes. In addition the solution method is tested using data provided by a log delivery trucking firm located in Mississippi. The firm operates sixty-eight trucks to deliver loads from twenty-two logging operations to thirteen mill destinations. The routes assigned by a supervisory person are used as a benchmark to compare the manual generated solution to the solution obtained using the proposed method. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. The effect of the water: Vanadyl acetylacetonate ratio on electrochemical and structural properties of nanostructured vanadium oxide films was examined. The X-ray diffraction studies indicated that very strong crystallization of the VO2 monoclinic phase occurred for the as-deposited films at the annealing temperature of 500 degrees C. According to the atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy measurements the size and morphology of the granular structured film depend on the water: Vanadyl acetylacetonate ratio. I-V curve spectra were used to compute several characteristics of the films coated on indium tin oxide substrates such as the optical density color efficiency and diffusion coefficient. Even though water: Vanadyl acetylacetonate ratio of 0.1 is expected to give the highest color efficiency value (33 cm(2)/C) higher diffusion coefficient (3.15 x 10(-12) cm(2)/s) is observed in the ratio of 0.01. As a result the correlation between the ratios and electrochromic properties of the films was established. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. VincentThis paper is concerned with a challenging problem of channel estimation and equalization for amplify-and-forward cooperative relay based orthogonal frequency division multi-plexing (OFDM) systems in sparse underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. The sparseness of the channel impulse response and prior information for the non-Gaussian channel gains modeled by an exact continuous Gaussian mixture (CGM) are exploited to improve the performance of the channel estimation algorithm. The resulting novel algorithm initially estimates the overall sparse complex-valued channel taps from the source to the destination as well as their locations using the matching pursuit (MP) approach. The effective time-domain non-Gaussian noise is approximated well as a Gaussian noise in the frequency-domain where the estimation takes place. An efficient and low complexity algorithm is developed based on a combination of the MP and the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) based space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization technique to improve the estimates of the channel taps and their locations in an iterative manner. Making decisions at this stage becomes very difficult due to imprecise and uncertain product requirements. So the evaluation process of determining the most satisfying conceptual design has been a very vital issue for companies to survive in fast-growing markets for a long time. Therefore most companies have used various methods to successfully carry out this difficult and time-consuming process. Of these methods an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been widely used in multiple-criteria decision-making problems (i.e. concept selection equipment evaluation). In this study however we use an analytic network process (ANP) a more general form of AHP due to the fact that AHP cannot accommodate the variety of interactions dependencies and feedback between higher and lower level elements. Briefly in this paper an ANP-based approach is presented to evaluate a set of conceptual design alternatives in order to reach to the best concept satisfying the needs and expectations of both customers and company. The chemical structures of all compounds were confirmed by elemental analyses IR H-1 NMR and ESI-MS. All the compounds were investigated for their ability to selectively inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) by in vitro tests. MAO activities of the compounds were compared with moclobemide and selegiline and all the compounds were found to inhibit human MAO-A selectively. The inhibition profile was found to be competitive and reversible for all compounds by in vitro tests. Among the compounds examined compounds 5ae 5af and 5ag were more selective than moclobemide with respect to the K (i) values experimentally found. In addition the compound 5bg showed MAO-A inhibitor activity as well as moclobemide. A series of experimentally tested compounds (5ae-5ch) were docked computationally to the active site of the MAO-A and MAO-B isoenzyme. The AUTODOCK 4.01 program was employed to perform automated molecular docking.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 24Qos-Constrained Semi-Persistent Scheduling of Machine-Type Communications in Cellular Networks(IEEE, 2019) Karadağ, Göksu; Gül, Recep; Sadi, Yalçın; Ergen, Sinem ColeriThe dramatic growth of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication in cellular networks brings the challenge of satisfying the quality of service (QoS) requirements of a large number of M2M devices with limited radio resources. In this paper we propose an optimization framework for the semi-persistent scheduling of M2M transmissions based on the exploitation of their periodicity with the goal of reducing the overhead of the signaling required for connection initiation and scheduling. The goal of the optimization problem is to minimize the number of frequency bands used by the M2M devices to allow fair resource allocation of newly joining M2M and human-to-human communications. The constraints of the problem are delay and periodicity requirements of the M2M devices. We first prove that the optimization problem is NP-hard and then propose a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm employing a fixed priority assignment according to the QoS characteristics of the devices. We show that this heuristic algorithm provides an asymptotic approximation ratio of 2.33 to the optimal solution for the case where the delay tolerances of the devices are equal to their periods. Through extensive simulations we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs better than the existing algorithms in terms of frequency band usage and schedulability.Article Citation - WoS: 14Force-Directed Approaches To Sensor Localization(Association for Computing Machinery, 2010) Efrat, Alon; Forrester, David; Iyer, Anand; Kobourov, Stephen G.; Erten, Cesim; Kılış, OzanAs the number of applications of sensor networks increases so does the interest in sensor network localization that is in recovering the correct position of each node in a network of sensors from partial connectivity information such as adjacency range or angle between neighboring nodes. In this article we consider the anchor-free localization problem in sensor networks that report possibly noisy range information and angular information about the relative order of each sensor's neighbors. Previously proposed techniques seem to successfully reconstruct the original positions of the nodes for relatively small networks with nodes distributed in simple regions. However these techniques do not scale well with network size and yield poor results with nonconvex or nonsimple underlying topology. Moreover the distributed nature of the problem makes some of the centralized techniques inapplicable in distributed settings. To address these problems we describe a multiscale dead-reckoning (MSDR) algorithm that scales well for large networks can reconstruct complex underlying topologies and is resilient to noise. The MSDR algorithm takes its roots from classic force-directed graph layout computation techniques. These techniques are augmented with a multiscale extension to handle the scalability issue and with a dead-reckoning extension to overcome the problems arising with nonsimple topologies. Furthermore we show that the distributed version of the MSDR algorithm performs as well as if not better than its centralized counterpart as shown by the quality of the layout measured in terms of the accuracy of the computed pairwise distances between sensors in the network.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Babbling Through Social Media: a Cross-Country Study Mapping Out Social Networks Using Ewom Intentions(Springer, 2023) Zülal, İşler; Kıygı-Çallı, Meltem; El Oraiby, MaryamThis research aims to determine the factors affecting the users’ electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) seeking and sharing intentions and to reveal the interactions among and within clusters using social network analysis (SNA). This study includes three hierarchical sub-studies conducted in two countries, Turkey and Poland. First, we develop a segmentation for social networking site (SNS) users based on the frequency of sharing product-related information on SNSs. Second, we investigate the impact of several factors that affect eWOM seeking and sharing intentions using regression analysis. In the second sub-study, we also include the identified segments developed in the first sub-study as another factor that may have differentiated eWOM intentions. Third, to understand the degree of interaction among SNS users, we apply an SNA using the forecasted eWOM intentions scores from the second sub-study, which gives us hypothetical social networks. The results of SNA present strong interactions inter- and intra-clusters in both countries. Some key findings include the identification of three SNS user segments, including “Middlers,” that may be of particular interest to brands. We also find that in terms of eWOM intentions, users in Turkey are more active than in Poland. Although some predictors of eWOM seeking and sharing intentions differ between the two countries, users intend to be more active in eWOM seeking than in eWOM sharing. Composite films were prepared by mixing of various mass fractions of MWCNT in PS-water dispersions. After water evaporates powder composite films were annealed at 175 degrees C above the glass transition of PS for 20 min. Photon transmission and two point probe resistivity techniques were employed to determine the variations of the optical and the electrical properties of composites. Transmitted light intensity I(tr) and surface resistivity R(s) were monitored as a function of MWCNT mass fraction (M). It was observed that both the surface resistivity and the optical transparency were decreased by increasing the amount of MWCNT added to the polymeric system. Conductivity and optical results were interpreted according to the classical and site percolation theory respectively. The electrical (sigma) and the optical (op) percolation threshold values and critical exponents were calculated as M(sigma) = 1.8 wt.% M(op) = 0-0.13 wt.% and beta(sigma) = 2.25 beta(op) = 0.32 respectively. The cellular phone network cells and signals have been used as the test bed where data are collected by means of a smart phone. Location and signal strength data are obtained by random navigation and this information is used to develop a learning system for cells with known base station location. The model is applied to data collected in other cells to predict their base station locations. Results are consistent and indicating a potential for effective use of this methodology. The performance increases by increasing the training set size. Several shortcomings and future research topics are discussed. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
