Abstract

In this study, how female characters are represented in a popular Hollywood movie and in the remake of this movie is examined. In this context, the main question of the study has been whether this is the main purpose of gender-swap reboots, which at first glance seems to be a move to increase the representation of women in cinema, and whether it affects the representation positively both numerically and qualitatively. On the theoretical basis of the study, together with the studies on the concept of representation; Studies on marginalization and gender representations, representation of the other in cinema and gender representations are included. Not only gender but also racial representations were evaluated, and previous studies on classical hero narratives and remakes were also included in order to get to the basis of the narrative structure of the films. In the light of these theoretical foundations, content analysis has been made on the films and many elements such as character construction, symbols and dialogues have been analyzed. In the analysis of the films, apart from gender and minority representations, some marketing strategies in the films and the messages in the subtexts were also interpreted. In the conclusion part, it has been determined that the aim of gender-swap reboots in this movie example is to create discourses that appeal to the ideologies that dominate the political and social environment of the period, or to achieve box office success with productions that will be embraced by those who belong to these ideologies but will be criticized by those from the segments with opposing ideologies. It is among the findings that the primary aim is to benefit from the binary polarization created by the current political environment instead of increasing the number and quality of women's representation in cinema, and that they exhibit a structure that does not diverge from the classical discourses that marginalize or stereotype. Bu çalışmada, hafızalarda yer edinmiş popüler bir Hollywood filminde ve bu filmin yeniden yapımında kadın karakterlerin nasıl temsil edildiği incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda, ilk bakışta sinemada kadın temsilini arttırmaya yönelik bir hamle gibi görünen cinsiyet dönüşümlü yeniden yapımların esas amacının bu olup olmadığı ve temsili hem sayısal hem de nitelik olarak olumlu yönde etkileyip etkilemediği çalışmanın temel sorusu olmuştur. Çalışmanın kuramsal temelinde temsil kavramı üzerine yapılmış çalışmalarla birlikte; ötekileştirme ve toplumsal cinsiyet temsilleri üzerine yapılan çalışmalar, sinemada ötekinin temsili ve cinsiyet temsilleri üzerine yer verilmiştir. Yalnızca cinsiyet değil, ırksal bağlamda da temsiller değerlendirilmiş, filmlerin anlatı yapısının temeline inmek için klasik kahraman anlatısı ve yeniden yapımlar üzerine yazılmış önceki çalışmalara da yer verilmiştir. Bu kuramsal temellerin ışığında filmlere içerik analizi yapılmış ve karakter inşası, semboller ve diyaloglar gibi birçok öğenin çözümlemesi yapılmıştır. Filmlerin analizinde cinsiyet ve azınlık temsilleri dışında filmlerdeki bazı pazarlama stratejileri ve alt metinlerde yer alan mesajların da yorumlaması yapılmıştır. Sonuç bölümünde, bu film örneğinde cinsiyet dönüşümlü yeniden yapımların amacının daha çok dönemin politik ve toplumsal ortamına hâkim ideolojilere yakınlaşacak söylemlerde bulunmak veya bu ideolojilere mensup kişiler tarafından sahiplenilecek fakat karşıt ideolojilere sahip kesimdekiler tarafından tepki çekecek yapımlarla gişe başarısını elde etme amacı güttükleri saptanmıştır. Öncelikli amacın sinemada kadın temsilinin sayısını ve kalitesini arttırmak yerine mevcut siyasi ortamın yarattığı ikili kutuplaşmadan faydalanmak olduğu ve ötekileştiren veya klişeleştiren klasik söylemlerden çok da uzaklaşmayan bir yapı sergiledikleri bulgular arasındadır.
