The subject of this thesis is the structure known as Andonyan Vank Armenian School, having the endowment documents dating back to 10 Safer 1275 on hijri calendar (September 19th, 1858). The purpose of the thesis is to document this historically significant structure and determine the conservation methods for the edifice in the district of Ortaköy which has by now lost most of its historical texture.First chapter describes briefly the purpose and methods to be applied to the work involving the thesis, and gives information on the historical setting and the current conditions of the district of Ortaköy. Second chapter records the information found on the broader borders of the thesis being the Bosphorus area, such as the physical aspects and sociological changes in the area throughout history. The district of Ortaköy has been then focused on, reguarding the history of the disctrict, changing architectural heritage and lifestyles. The ever changing lifestyle of Ortaköy and its effect on structures and living spaces were inspected and integrated into the research.Third chapter focuses on the Armenian heritage in İstanbul due to the fact that the structure which is the subject of the thesis has been used by the Catholic Armenian Community for a long period of time.Fourth chapter focuses on the Armenian education activities in İstanbul and research on Armenian schools due to the fact that the structure has been registered as an educational building.Fifth chapter focuses on the historical research on the structure itself and its current condition. All available documents have been brought together and the current physical conditions of the structure have been fully documented, photographically and via architectural survey drawings. These documents have then been utilized in documenting and defining the damages, causes of damages on the structure and late additions. However due to the limited number of Armenian population and the limits on the Armenian education activities, an analogical comparison between the said building and other similar structures has not been possible. Therefore the school has been evaluated as a unique structure. In light of the findings during the survey research, necessary interventions for the rehabilitation of the structure. User requirements and the needs of the structure have been incorporated in the project unless they conflict with conservation principles; however the approach has been limited to current usage ideas.en_US
