The focus of the study was to also find out the perceptions of teachers about implementing these two instructional methods in their teaching practices. The participants were 97 students and 2 teachers engaged in the 7th grade EFL program at a private school in Istanbul Turkey. Data was collected quantitatively from a vocabulary check test and motivation scale as well as qualitatively from semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that implementing TBI had positive impact on students' vocabulary development as well as their motivation. In line with these findings it was also suggested that teachers perceived TBI to be a more effective method to be incorporated in secondary grade language practices. Based on the gathered findings suggestions for redesigning and implementing the existing 7th grade EFL program were provided.Article Citation - WoS: 8Elderly People's Choice of Media and Their Perceived State of Loneliness(Online Journal Communication & Media Technologies-Ojcmt, 2016) Ongun, Erdem; Güder, Feride Zeynep; Demirağ, AşkınThis study aims at finding the relationship between elderly people's perceived state of loneliness and their choice of (old and/or new) media instruments. The sample of the study consists of randomly selected 300 elderly people over 60 who reside in rest homes in two different cities, Hatay and Istanbul in Turkey. Participants were given a questionnaire with three sections. The first section included questions related to the participants' demographic characteristics. Adapted from Russell's (1996) "Loneliness Scale (Version 3)", the second part was related to participants' perceived state of loneliness. Final section was about their choice of media and related details such as aim and time spent on them. Analyzed by statistical methods, study findings show that elderly people from two different social settings and with changing demographic features display differing degrees of loneliness with a significant relationship between the forms of media they used, their related choices, aims and perceived state of loneliness.Editorial Citation - WoS: 148Citation - Scopus: 158The Geodynamics of the Aegean and Anatolia: Introduction(2007) Taymaz, Tuncay; Yılmaz, Yücel; Dilek, Yıldırım R.[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 28Going Against the National Cultural Grain: a Longitudinal Case Study of Organizational Culture Change in Turkish Higher Education(Carfax Publishing, 2000) Herguner, Gülten; Reeves, Nigel B.R.This paper presents results of a longitudinal case study inquiry into the measurement of organizational culture change through the implementation of total quality management (TQM) concepts in a higher education context. The inquiry deals with the relationship between national culture and the company corporate culture the consequences of manager style change for TQM implementation and how culture change can be measured adequately. The results are achieved by the utilization of external (quantitative) and internal (qualitative) measurement devices. Limitations consequent upon the number of participants and the dual role of the researcher indicate the potential value of further investigations into the topic using these devices. The main conclusion is that the maintenance of TQM systems without continued senior managerial commitment may not suffice to secure change and prevent a reversion to earlier cultural patterns. Certainly since the findings of this inquiry are limited to one case study it would be unwise to assume that similar results would necessarily pertain in other higher education contexts. Nevertheless we are of the view that the findings are suggestive of the pressures imposed on organizational change by national cultural patterns. The devices implemented for measuring organizational cultural change while not designed for that purpose have however yielded sufficiently well-defined results to suggest the value of similar implementations to gain insight into the topic in further higher education and other organizational contexts.Article How To Transform Language Education for Next Generation Learners: a Path To Follow in Higher Education in the 21st Century(Nesibe Aydin Education Inst, 2015) Munzur, ZeynepWith the changing face of education technology is a powerful asset for the 21st century teachers and students if pedagogy is considered as the major concern rather than technology itself. Technology seems very attractive to teachers and students but it is good to keep in mind that it is not just games and applications. We must see not only it as fun but also its functional power on learning teaching and assessing. As teachers change the way they teach due to new technologies the traditional pedagogy is replaced by student-centered and project-based learning and teaching. This can provide a deeper understanding and learning and greater student success. Therefore an effective next generation teaching needs to meet the 21st century expectations. Schools and teachers must be well-equipped with new genres and resources so that they can enhance the necessary skills and attitudes of studentsArticle Citation - WoS: 1Impacts of Technology Enhanced Efl Reading Classroom on Student Learning and Achievement(Nesibe Aydin Education Inst, 2017) Munzur, ZeynepTechnology is considered one of the most important aspects of education. Today not only college education but also language teaching is being challenged by the development of technology. Since technology is regarded as a powerful asset for the 21st century teachers and students pedagogy must be a priority rather than technology itself. As institutions schools and colleges change the way they teach due to new technologies and convert their current curriculum and teaching strategies into newer ones to equip today's learners a deeper understanding of the subjects and greater student success can be evidential. Therefore an effective next generation teaching needs to fulfill the expectations of the 21st century in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This paper presents students' attitudes to technology enhanced reading classroom and its effects on their academic achievement at Kadir Has University School of Foreign Languages English Preparatory Program. From this analysis if appropriate technology is integrated into reading lessons the students seem to reflect a positive attitude towards reading. It is concluded that with a well-equipped and staged classroom presentation and instruction deficient reading activities in the current text book became more communicative and collaborative by using technology. The results also reveal that students have become more efficient readers and have achieved significant academic progress. The study implies that technology enhanced reading lessons have improved their motivation toward learning. However it should be kept in mind that technology rapidly changes so constant updating is required for such institutions and teachers. This work is primarily conducted and seeks to shed light on the importance and benefits of technology enhanced classrooms.Review Citation - WoS: 2Management of Non-Wood Forest Products in Turkey(KAHRAMANMARAS SUTCU IMAM UNIV, 2018) Ok, Kenan; Tengiz, Yusuf ZiyaNon-wood forest products are specific goods or services which are considered as out of wood raw materials found in nature. Some of the products are cultivated because of their high demand and produced with agricultural practices. Thyme used in herbal teas and primrose used widely as an ornamental plant are significant examples of plants both collected from nature and have agricultural production in Turkey. However most of the non-wood forest products are still consumed by collecting them from nature. Turkey has a great capacity on non-wood forest products due to the advantage provided by high biodiversity. Additionally people in Turkey has a wide range of experience on the utilization of wild plants and there is a significant diversity of use of non-wood forest products as a result of geographical location and historical heritage. Despite these advantages it is difficult to mention that sustainable management of non-wood forest products is totally guaranteed in Turkey as is the case in many other countries. The capacity of non-wood forest products in Turkey was introduced in this study. Institutional structure responsible for the management of non-wood forest products has been explained. The place of non-wood forest products in country plans and legislations regulating the ways of utilizing them were presented. As a result although richness of non-wood forest products have been discovered and an institutional structure responsible for the diversity of these products have already been established it was found that a way of planning and management structure ensuring the sustainability for the diversity of these species is still contentious while there are deficiencies on the species-specific information and management processes.Article Citation - WoS: 20Citation - Scopus: 25Migration Asmovement Andmultiplace Life: Some Recent Developments in Rural Living Structures in Turkey(Wiley-Blackwell, 2014) Öztürk, Murat; Hilton, Andy; Jongerden, JoostDiscussing recent trends and developments in migration and mobility affecting what may be referred to as a reconstitution' of villages this paper discusses the changing character of rural settlement and settlement patterns in Turkey today. The binary division of rural and urban is questioned through a dialectical/relational approach to settlement formation while settlement is defined by relation to (human) movement itself understood as incorporating the modalities of migration and mobility. By focusing on the socio-economics of increasing affluence the advance of capital generally and the introduction of neoliberalism into agriculture in particular a number of contemporary rural-oriented (migratory/mobility) movements and living structures' are investigated which taken together suggest a growing development of dual settlement' and multiplace hybrid' life. The paper concludes with a typology of villages and some thoughts on the theoretical implications of this study. YücelThe Marmara Region of northwest Turkey covers the Marmara Sea Basin and the surrounding lands. In the region morphologically different areas may be distinguished. The Marmara Sea Basin is a structural depression. The land to the north is known as the Thrace-Kocaeli Peneplain a flatland elevated above a horst. This may be referred to as the Istanbul Horst bounded by two strike-slip fault zones which define the structural boundaries of two sea basinsConference Object Near Field Parameter Estimation of Moving Sources With Recursive Expectation Maximization Algorithm(IEEE, 2006) Cekli, Serap; Cekli, Erdinc; Kabaoğlu, Nihat; Cirpan, Hakan AliIn this paper maximum likelihood (ML) estimator is proposed for the joint estimation of the direction of arrival (DOA) and range parameters of moving sources in the near-field of the antenna array. ML estimation algorithm is presented for deterministic signal model. Recursive form of the expectation maximization (REM) algoritm is suggested for the estimation of the near-field parameters because there is not closed form solutions for the maximum likelihood functions. Moreover simulation results of the suggested algorithm are presented.Article Citation - WoS: 2A Study of 8th Graders’ Perceptions of Socio-Cultural Perspective of Creativity by Using Information Technology Tools in Realisation of Homework Goals(The Turkish Online Journal of Educational Technology, 2011) Öngün, Erdem; Altas, Dilek; Demirağ, AşkinThe study aims at evaluating the perceptions of 8(th) graders towards the use of information technologies ranging from the internet and multimedia tools in socio-cultural perspective of creativity while they are doing their homework in the light of the National Education Ministry's regulation related to elementary and secondary school students' extra-curricular activities. The population of the research that was realised by data collected through survey method consists of 8(th) grade students in elementary and secondary schools in Istanbul. Randomly chosen 435 students from five schools in Istanbul make the sample of the research. In terms of students' perceptions results of the study show that regardless of gender students enjoy discovering and exploiting online and offline resources through problem solving skills especially when they have the opportunity to do this on their own which also shows that they think they feel more confident mobile and creative in cyber but socio-cultural reality.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Support Vector Machines Based Target Tracking Techniques(IEEE, 2006) Özer, Sedat; Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Kabaoğlu, NihatThis paper addresses the problem of aplying powerful statistical pattern classification algorithms based on kernels to target tracking. Rather than directly adapting a recognizer we develop a localizer directly using the regression form of the Support Vector Machines (SVM). The proposed approach considers using dynamic model together as feature vectors and makes the hyperplane and the support vectors follow the changes in these features. The performance of the tracker is demostrated in a sensor network scenario with a moving target in a polynomial route.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Support vector regression for surveillance purposes(Springer-Verlag Berlin, 2006) Özer, Sedat; Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Kabaoğlu, NihatThis paper addresses the problem of applying powerful statistical pattern classification algorithm based on kernel functions to target tracking on surveillance systems. AKP Republican People's Party (RPP) a.k.a. CHP Nationalist Movement Party (NMP) a.k.a. MHP and Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) a.k.a. HDP) represented in the Turkish Grand Assembly during general election campaign of 2015. The cover photos which illustrate appeal for vote and support are intended to communicate political competition and elicit political ideological support and social responses. Using these cover photos on the Facebook profiles of these political parties as a sample the paper reflects on intertexuality and interpellation processes and how these concepts contribute to further understanding the ways that engaged voters as viewers become participants and supporters in the narratives generated by these single visual texts. What narrative processes are in action during an encounter with a visual appeal for vote and support and how these processes function and how voters as viewing subjects might be able to exchange positions differently in relation to the visual texts appearing in the Facebook cover photos of the related political parties are the main questions to be answered and discussed in this study. Using a qualitative methodology the study concludes with an overall comparative evaluation of the subject.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 9Unconditional Maximum Likelihood Approach for Localization of Near-Field Sources in 3-D Space(IEEE, 2004) Kabaoğlu, Nihat; Çırpan, Hakan Ali; Paker, SelçukSince maximum likelihood (ML) approaches have better resolution performance than the conventional localization methods in the presence of less number and highly correlated source signal samples and low signal to noise ratios we propose unconditional ML (UML) method for estimating azimuth elevation and range parameters of near-field sources in 3-D space in this paper Besides these superiorities stability asymptotic unbiasedness asymptotic minimum variance properties are motivated the application of ML approach. Despite these advantages ML estimator has computational complexity. Fortunately this problem can be tackled by the application of Expectation/Maximization (EM) iterative algorithm which converts the multidimensional search problem to one dimensional parallel search problems in order to prevent computational complexity.Editorial Without Boundaries: an Interview With Huseyin Tabak Director of the Legend of the Ugly King (2017)(INTELLECT LTD, 2018) Cengiz, Nuran Buket; Tabak, Hüseyin[Abstract Not Available]
