Conference Object Blending Science and Art: an Educational Perspective(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2019) Balkır Kuru, Nur; Şaher, Konca; Mıhçı, Gürkanrt and design education enable students to find creative and logical solutions to various design problems. The use of materials, constructive analysis, craftmanship, and originality are some key criteria in the process. Size and dimensionality, the proportion analysis, expression integrity, substantiality, and presentability can vary depending on the project and the context. As one of the methods used to provide targeted experience and learning in art and design education, interdisciplinary work presents a right ground for complex design issues. The workshop we carried out together with the Tubitak National Metrology Institution (UME) named "Art's Metrology, Metrology's Art" aimed to transform art, design, and science together into a product. As rational, natural, and appropriate connections can be established between art and science, students were asked to develop a method to meet the objectives and criteria of both around a certain conceptual focus. An important inclusive of the workshop was to have students observe, get informed, and engage in dialogue and ultimately increase their curiosity about a certain mechanism outside of their studies. The group dynamic in the process of creating three-dimensional and displayable works within a scheduled time was supported by a scientist from the metrology department, three art and design instructors, Konca Saher, Nur Balkir, and Gurkan Mihci from Kadir Has University. The finished works were then exhibited in the Tubitak-UME in Gebze compound. This study, which blends science and art, provided students with the opportunity to experiment with a science field, and to develop their predictions about their own disciplines. The paper will present the development and the outcome of the workshop.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 7Border as "zone of Indistinction": the State of Exception and the Spectacle of Terror Along Turkey's Border With Syria(Sage Publications Inc, 2018) Tuncer-Gürkaş, EzgiTurkey's border with Syria today is a laboratory in which biopolitics and the spectacle coincide in new ways. As a consequence of the ongoing war between the state and Kurdish insurgents, and the state of emergency accompanying it, this border region has incrementally transformed into a zone of indistinction in which the spatial concepts of inside and outside interpenetrate. As exception is normalized, the logic of the camp (in Agamben's sense) tends to become a dispositif. Exceptional routines are being exercised in this border region both to (re)construct the figure of the Kurd as a citizen and to generalize the domain of the camp, while also producing bare life in the context of counterterrorism. However, the Kurd as a subject cannot be ambiguously constructed, neither can the region be politically homogenized. Based on multisited fieldwork in the border city of Mardin, I claim that this zone of indistinction is simultaneously the place of revolt and resistance for the Kurdish case. Against this backdrop, the article argues the practical implications of counterterrorism policies in the region by focusing on how the state of exception is enforced on the Kurdish population as a biopolitical tool while being represented as a public spectacle to the rest of Turkey.Book Review Building Modern Turkey: State Space and Ideology in the Early Republic(Cambridge Univ Press, 2016) Bozdoğan, Sibel[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 9Collaborative Design of an Active Learning Classroom With High School Students and Teachers(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2020) Kepez, Orçun; Ust, SelinPurpose - The aim of this study is to understand classroom settings desired by high school students and teachers in an active learning classroom. The research question is whether students and teachers will differ from each other when designing an active learning classroom. Design/methodology/approach - In an effort to design a learning environment for an advanced placement programme, action research methodology was followed by conducting a participatory workshop in a real active learning classroom with future users. Working in isolation from one another, students and teachers designed their own classrooms by forming different learning centres. During the study, two groups, made up of ten high school students and seven teachers, respectively, were asked to arrange the furniture in an active learning classroom. The groups were free to form as many furniture arrangement configurations as they wished and were asked to write about their workshop experiences afterwards. Once they had completed both tasks, their plan layouts were examined. Findings - All of the plan layouts were found to fall into one of three categories: a traditional layout, a small group layout or a single large group layout. The written texts were also analysed, which revealed different perspectives of each participating group. As students and teachers explore different learning opportunities, they appear to be driven by different kinds of experiences when they endeavour to organize their classrooms. As an example of this type of pattern application, the leaf venation algorithm is introduced that can be customized through parametric inputs and density maps. This method is extended onto mesh surfaces incorporating multiple software applications combining aspects of parametric design, optimization and digital fabrication. The dynamic workflow is presented using a case study project titled “Calyx,” a public artwork completed using the computational tools developed as part of the research. The networking structural pattern of the sculpture yielded to the development of a geometry optimization process that allowed the digital fabrication of planarized structural members. The technical aspects of the design development and post-rationalization process for the construction of leaf venations patterns are discussed.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 10Computational Modeling and Analysis of Seljukid Muqarnas in Kayseri(ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY1601 Broadway, 10th Floor, NEW YORK, NY 10019-7434) Gökmen, Sabri; Başık, Altan; Aykın, Yusuf; Alacam, SemaAs a historical and ornamental building element, muqarnas are widely found among the entrances of madrasas, mosques, and hans in Anatolian Seljuk architecture. In Kayseri (Turkey), muqarnas structures are characterized by symmetrical distribution of patterned geometric layers that presents computational rules for the design and construction of these ornamental structures. The presented research focuses on 12 unique muqarnas structures that are analyzed through a computational methodology combining photogrammetry, three-dimensional modeling, symmetry, and graph theory. The computational analysis shows that Seljukid muqarnas exhibit patterned branching of the symmetry axis between layers radiating from their geometric center. The mosque was built in an area very popular in the Tulip Period at Kagithane and not in traditional districts of Istanbul such as the historic peninsula Uskudar or Eyup. This unusual choice of location is a reflection of the characteristics of its time. At the second half of the century new and different concepts in architecture were assessed in the Ottoman land and especially in urban Istanbul. Tulip Period was a period when western influences were first and naively flourished in the built environment. For the first time decoration program outside of the classical canon of Ottoman architecture were witnessed on details of the decorative elements such as doors windows and inscriptions and fountains as the focus of urban space were set at the centers of the squares and construction activity gained pace extramuros. The most fascinating work of the period is the Sa'adabad Palace built outside the historic peninsula by the Kagithane Creek. Sa'dabad Mosque was built in 1135/1722 within the Sa'dabad Palace. It was repaired at the times of Selim III (HD. 1789-1807) and Mahmut II (HD. 1808-1839). The original architecture of the mosque is unknown. Because the existing mosque was rebuilt by Abdulaziz (HD. 1861-1876) in 1279/1862 it is identified as the Aziziye Mosque after the Sultan Abdulaziz as well. The architect of this last mosque is the Balyan Family who had significant role at the construction activity of the period. Among many indoor positioning technologies we chose Wi-Fi BLE beacon and ultra-wide band (UWB) sensor technologies for their popularity and investigated their applicability in BM. We tested three technologies for error ranges and found an average error of 1.39 m for Wi-Fi in a 36 m(2) test area (6m x 6 m) 0.86 m for the BLE beacon in a 37.44 m(2) test area (9.6 m x 3.9 m) and 0.24 m for ultra-wide band sensors in a 36 m(2) test area (6 m x 6 m). We simulated the applicability of these error ranges for real-time locations by using a behavioral dataset collected from an active learning classroom. We used two UWB tags simultaneously by incorporating a custom-designed ceiling system in a new 39.76 m(2) test area (7.35 m x 5.41 m). We considered 26 observation points and collected data for 180 s for each point (total 4680) with an average error of 0.2072 m for 23 points inside the test area. Finally we demonstrated the use of ultra-wide band sensor technology for BM.Article Ecological Strategies for Designing Halys River: a Landscape of Flux(Scibulcom Ltd, 2019) Yıldırım-Okta, BirgeNatural and manmade disasters led to the emergence of new approaches in designing our environment in the postindustrial era. Modern technological infrastructures failure to respond to the challenges from environmental hazards led the designers to restructure the landscape. This in turn, led to a shift in landscape architecture, planning and architecture discipline. In the past decade green infrastructure has been a topic for debate among practitioners and theorists across different disciplines, ranging from architecture, urban planning, engineering to geography and biology. The discourse appears to be an operational and promising tool in planning, designing resilient eco-system based infrastructures. This paper discusses an interdisciplinary design proposal for Sivas, Halys River in a landscape urbanistic manner. The aim of the project was to create a cultural and ecological corridor in Sivas, Turkey that is adaptable to changes and dynamics over time, considerate to ecosystem and human conditions. In the light of discourse of green infrastructure the paper derives adaptive design strategies for ecological urbanism.Article Citation - WoS: 2The Effect of Reverberation Time and Signal-To Ratio on Word Recognition Scores by Adults and Children in Classrooms(Yıldız Technical Univ, 2019) Şaher, Konca; Karaböce, BakiThis paper seeks to assess the effect of reverberation time, distribution of reverberation time over the frequency range and signal-to-noise ratio on speech intellibility by adults and children in classrooms by the use of phonetically balanced monosyllabic Turkish word recognition tests. Two sets of 25-items phonetically balanced monosyllabic Turkish words were recorded in a full anechoic chamber. Auralizations of the recordings were developed in an acoustic simulation software for a range of reverberation time of 0,8 seconds (average of 500 Hz, 1000 Hz ve 2000 Hz), 0,4 seconds (average of 500 Hz, 1000 Hz ve 2000 Hz) and 0,4 seconds (125-4000 Hz) and two signal-to-noise ratios of 0 dB and 15dB in a typical classroom. Listening tests developed from auralizations were presented to adults and children. The results show that when reverberation time (average of 500 Hz, 1000 Hz ve 2000 Hz) is reduced from 0.8 seconds to 0.4 seconds for both signal-to-noise ratios of 0 dB and 15 dB, the percentage of speech recognition scores increases in both adults and children. However, in case of 0 dB signal-to-noise, when the reverberation time falls from 0.4 seconds (average of 500 Hz, 1000 Hz ye 2000 Hz) to 0.4 seconds (125-4000 Hz) while there is no significant improvement in the word recognition scores by adults, there is a significant improvement in childrens' scores. For the 15 dB signal-to-noise ratio case, reverberation time of 0,4 seconds (125 - 4000 Hz) does not have a notable impact on word recognition scores for both children and adults.Article An English Missionary Society in Adrianople: Evangelicalism, Millenialism and the Jews(Türk Tarih Kurumu, 2019) Sağ, Mustafa KaanBritish Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Jews (BSPGJ) was founded in1842 in London in order to convert Jews to Christianity. In the second half of the 19th century the society established several mission centres in Europe and North Africa, including Edirne in 1865. By offering medical and educational service the society converted a great number of Jews to Christianity. In the beginning of the 20t h century the mission became active in the form of an educational institution called "Adrianople English School". Although the traces of the Edirne mission disappeared in the First World War, the architecture of the school building supports the description of the society's cultural relation with the Ottoman society as far as it appears on the photos of the period. In this work first it will be focused on the religious movement called Evangelicalism, which directed BSPGJ and similar British societies to the Jews. Second the history of the society and the conversion of Jews in Edirne will be examined. Design as an activity has always been considered as a creative tool. Design education mainly focuses on enhancing creative approaches with various 2D and 3D project based basic design studies. As the tools of designing developed in parallel with technology the core structure of the education is based on a model with creative and analytical aspects: Designerly way of thinking aims at originality and uniqueness. Today the need for innovation has become more evident than ever. The main purpose of the paper is to explore and to identify the relationship between creativity innovation and design related to design education. Bruno Munari(Milano 1907-1998) as a designer and a design educator is one of the prominent names reflecting innovation and creativity in the history of Italian Design. His innovative contribution to Italian Design is reinforced by his experimental design educator background in research for creativity. The paper aims at exploring the educational structures through history of design and design education that leads to creative thinking and nurture sustainable innovation through the case study of Bruno Munari's works as a designer and as an educator. In particular, we see that males (type-m individuals) typically associate a given emotion with darker colors, while females (typef individuals) associate it with brighter colors. A similar trend was observed with older people and associations to lighter colors. One of us experienced the effects of Facebook on freshmen while the other examined it with sophomores and juniors. Our analysis of the data focused on the content of students' posts on Facebook groups informal student interviews our experiences in studios and our reflective cross-evaluation. Our comparative analysis showed that Facebook better serves as a boundary object in the later years of design education. The freshmen and partly sophomore were not able to make effective use of this medium for exchanging knowledge. The Turkish inscription written in the Latin Alphabet "Yorguc Rustem Pasa Camisi 1426" on the plate on the portal, consubstantiating Yorguc Pasa and Rustem Pasa, identifies a historical figure who never existed as the patron of the building. This consubstantiation refers to two important actors in the construction process of the mosque: Yorguc Pasa (d. 1442), the vizier of Murad II and Rustem Pasa (d. 1561), the vizier of Suleyman I. The 44.2 km commuter line, composed of twenty-seven stations was opened in 1872, during the period of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz. For the Ottomans the railway played a major role in the metamorphosis of the city/country. The establishment of railways marked a new era in the urban life of Ottoman towns and cities. The railway stations manifested modernisation, built to promote European architectural designs and became an integral part of urban social life. After the establishment of the Turkish Republic and the State Railways Company, the commuter line remained a key part of national policy and was seen as a manifestation of the young republic. The Marmaray Project aims to upgrade and join Asian and European suburban railway through a tunnel already built under the Bosporus. The work includes the demolition of old, original railway structures which are part of the architectural heritage of the historic railway network; also means the loss of an ecological green corridor. The research mainly discusses the need for preservation of the railway heritage, addressing its social and ecological benefits for the metropolitan city.
