Editorial Citation - WoS: 1Origins and Developments: a Brief Overview(Cambrıdge Univ Press, 2019) Hemiş, Özlem[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 9Collaborative Design of an Active Learning Classroom With High School Students and Teachers(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2020) Kepez, Orçun; Ust, SelinPurpose - The aim of this study is to understand classroom settings desired by high school students and teachers in an active learning classroom. The research question is whether students and teachers will differ from each other when designing an active learning classroom. Design/methodology/approach - In an effort to design a learning environment for an advanced placement programme, action research methodology was followed by conducting a participatory workshop in a real active learning classroom with future users. Working in isolation from one another, students and teachers designed their own classrooms by forming different learning centres. During the study, two groups, made up of ten high school students and seven teachers, respectively, were asked to arrange the furniture in an active learning classroom. The groups were free to form as many furniture arrangement configurations as they wished and were asked to write about their workshop experiences afterwards. Once they had completed both tasks, their plan layouts were examined. Findings - All of the plan layouts were found to fall into one of three categories: a traditional layout, a small group layout or a single large group layout. The written texts were also analysed, which revealed different perspectives of each participating group. As students and teachers explore different learning opportunities, they appear to be driven by different kinds of experiences when they endeavour to organize their classrooms. Originality/value - Never before has an active learning classroom been the site for a participatory furniture arrangement workshop that employs teachers and students.Book Part Alımlama Söylemleri ve Bir Söylem Janrı Olarak Kürt Sineması(Bağlam Yayınları, 2016)Article Citation - WoS: 1Haydarpasa-Gebze Railway as a Heritage of Landscape Infrastructure(Scibulcom Ltd, 2018) Yıldırım-Okta, BirgeThe modernisation of the suburban railway on the Asian side of Istanbul is part of the ongoing Marmaray Project. The 44.2 km commuter line, composed of twenty-seven stations was opened in 1872, during the period of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz. For the Ottomans the railway played a major role in the metamorphosis of the city/country. The establishment of railways marked a new era in the urban life of Ottoman towns and cities. The railway stations manifested modernisation, built to promote European architectural designs and became an integral part of urban social life. After the establishment of the Turkish Republic and the State Railways Company, the commuter line remained a key part of national policy and was seen as a manifestation of the young republic. The Marmaray Project aims to upgrade and join Asian and European suburban railway through a tunnel already built under the Bosporus. The work includes the demolition of old, original railway structures which are part of the architectural heritage of the historic railway network; also means the loss of an ecological green corridor. The research mainly discusses the need for preservation of the railway heritage, addressing its social and ecological benefits for the metropolitan city.Book Review Building Modern Turkey: State Space and Ideology in the Early Republic(Cambridge Univ Press, 2016) Bozdoğan, Sibel[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 3Haydarpasa Train Station: Present Past and Future(Middle East Technical Univ, 2013) Erkan Kösebay, YoncaThe facade of Haydarpasa Train Station has been changed more than once in the course of its century old life time. As an example of this type of pattern application, the leaf venation algorithm is introduced that can be customized through parametric inputs and density maps. This method is extended onto mesh surfaces incorporating multiple software applications combining aspects of parametric design, optimization and digital fabrication. The dynamic workflow is presented using a case study project titled “Calyx,” a public artwork completed using the computational tools developed as part of the research. The networking structural pattern of the sculpture yielded to the development of a geometry optimization process that allowed the digital fabrication of planarized structural members. The technical aspects of the design development and post-rationalization process for the construction of leaf venations patterns are discussed.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Metamorphic Leaves(Mıt Press, 2020) Gökmen, SabriThis article introduces an algorithm influenced by Goethe's concept of metamorphosis capable of generating a wide range of parametric leaf forms. Metamorphosis is defined as alternating stages of expansion and contraction that are observable during the development of flowering plants. This principle is extended toward leaf morphology, where two main developmental trajectories are outlined. By formulating simple two-dimensional geometric rules, the author tests the concept of metamorphosis on parametric leaf forms.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1The Skeletal and Heaped Characteristic of Traditional Masonry Structures(2009) Alioğlu, Emine Füsun; Alper, BerrinJust as in all pre-industrial societies the historic structures in Anatolia derive from two materials timber and stone. In timber construction two categories namely heaped construction and skeletal construction are clearly distinguishable. In research to date it can be seen that these categories have been clearly defined and explained. Yet structural definitions in masonry buildings are mostly limited to the term heaped construction. However in traditional masonry structures it is possible to see whether clearly or under a layer a construction that reminds one of skeletal construction. In this paper historical masonry structures that have been often described as heaped construction but which actually contain both heaped and skeletal system characteristics will be discussed. This dual-system will be examined with examples from Ottoman mosques and masonry houses in Anatolia. © 2009 WIT Press.Book Part Filmler Neden Çoğu Kez Denizde Sona Erer? Yaşamın Kıysında(Bağlam Yayınları, 2013)Article Woman, Home, and the Question of Identity: a Critical Review of Feminist Literature(Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi Kadın Araştırmaları ve Eğitimi Merkezi, 2013) Kılıçkıran, DidemMuch ink has been spilled over the association of women with the material and imaginary geographies of the home. In this paper, I will discuss this association with reference to the feminist literature on the home, which, in the second half of the last century, produced a fascinating critique of the home as part of a larger debate on the connection between space and place and the construction of gender relations and ideologies. I will focus particularly on how the problem of the home in feminism has been defined as one of identity, referring to some key works in feminist literature that have put forward notions of the home as a place that women have to leave behind if they are to find their identities beyond those imposed upon them by society at large. In doing this, I will also give voice to criticisms that have been raised from within feminism itself against a totally negative depiction of the home, and discuss whether it is possible to envisage a more positive image of the home in feminism in relation to women’s identities.Article The Limits of Cis Compassion: The sad trans experience and its others in contemporary Turkish theatre(PERFORMANCE RESEAR, 2024) Yanıkcan, Ahmet BerkemIn the last decade, dramatic literature and theatre productions about trans women have become a significant part of Turkey's alternative theatre scene. These performances, pioneered by trans women, have been both celebrated and appropriated, with cis theatre makers often reshaping them within melodramatic conventions. Since the political ramifications of these theatrical productions are intricately linked to their narrative styles and genres, the employment of melodramatic portrayals presents emergent challenges for trans individuals, thereby culminating in a nuanced ‘transploitation’ of their narratives. While the melodramatic representations tell the stories of trans women's suffering and often end with the main character's death, the playwrights, actors, and the rest of the cast are almost always cisgender. Despite their popularity as well as aesthetic, social, and political significance, these plays have received limited scholarly attention. Moreover, the limited scholarship and public debates on them tend to treat their affective politics uncritically and even celebrate it. In the context of Turkey's liberal identity politics, these plays about trans women appear to challenge cis-heteropatriarchal oppression but ultimately reinforce cisnormative perspectives. In contrast, one-actor plays by transfeminist performers and playwrights challenge these melodramas. Characterized by themes of hope and resistance, transfeminist performances offer a contrast to mainstream portrayals of trans experience. These plays challenge the prevalent sadness in mainstream narratives about trans women, offering more empowering and representative portrayals. This juxtaposition sheds light on how sadness facilitates the experience of compassion, which both legitimizes and limits the performances about trans women.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 13Used and Rejected Decisions in Design Teamwork(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2013) Ensici, Ayhan; Badke-Schaub, Petra; Bayazit, Nigan; Lauche, KristinaDecision making in design requires careful consideration as any inaccuracies or faults can have serious consequences for the producer the user and/or the competitiveness of the company. Research investigating decision making in design so far has mainly focused on the selection of decisions as part of technical choices and classical optimisation problems. In recent years further research has been started to discover the characteristics of successful decision making in industry. These later mostly single case studies shed light on some general influences on decision making but so far have not identified different relevant patterns of decision-making processes in design teams which are influential on the result and the process of decision making such as the constituents of rejected decisions. The research study reported here was initiated to further analyse the components of decision-making processes in teams with special emphasis on the question of how decisions develop during the design process. For example what happens to rejected decisions in the course of the design process? The observed processes should be analysed in detail by assessing all utterances in an interaction protocol which can be used as indicators of underlying cognitive processes in decision makingConference Object London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games-Acoustic Design Aspects of Temporary Venues(European Acoustics Association EAA, 2014) Şaher, Konca; Cahill, BenThis paper concentrates on the acoustic design aspects of the Temporary Venues at London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project needed integration of individuals from various different client groups consultants and contractors into one team to work in a multi-disciplinary way. Atkins-Acoustics Noise and Vibration Consultancy worked with venue design team project managers sustainability consultants from London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and architects. The keywords for Temporary Venues are absence of legacy and sustainability. There are over 120 of Temporary Venues spread throughout London and other parts of UK. The acoustic analysis strategy had two main components: Noise to the environment and noise to the venue. Noise to the environment included baseline noise survey of the site in comparison to the 3D modelling of the venue for construction games and demolition phases. Noise to the venue included setting acoustic criteria for each component sound insulation reverberation time calculations public address and voice evacuation design and mechanical plant noise control.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Room Acoustic Modelling of a Reverberation Chamber(German Acoustical Society (DEGA), 2016) Şaher, Konca; Nas, Sezin; Karaböce, Baki; Kırbaş, Cafer; Bilgiç, EyüpThis paper aims at comparing measured broadband reverberation time values in the reverberation chamber of Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey - National Metrology Institute (TUBITAK-UME) in Gebze Turkey with the simulated reverberation time values from the room acoustical modelling of the same reverberation chamber. The reverberation chamber in TUBITAK-UME has a volume of 263m3 total inner surface area of 262 m2 and 16 diffusers made of Plexiglas and hung randomly in the room. The majority of the diffusers have hyperbolic shapes. There are also six absorbers to adjust the reverberation time of the room. Indications of difficulties in the calibration of the acoustic model with reference to the measured values and different frequencies are given and the modelling and measurement uncertainties and limitations are discussed. © 2016 German Acoustical Society (DEGA). This study aims to reveal the image of Olivera reflected in the works of contemporary Ottoman Byzantine Serbian Timurid and European sources narratives and arts with a focus on the life story of Olivera who although was essentially a member of the Ottoman dynasty did not have any monographs about her in Turkey.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 9Viewpoint: Historic Urban Landscape Approach for Sustainable Urban Development(Routledge Journals Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018) Erkan Kösebay, Yonca[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 7Border as "zone of Indistinction": the State of Exception and the Spectacle of Terror Along Turkey's Border With Syria(Sage Publications Inc, 2018) Tuncer-Gürkaş, EzgiTurkey's border with Syria today is a laboratory in which biopolitics and the spectacle coincide in new ways. As a consequence of the ongoing war between the state and Kurdish insurgents, and the state of emergency accompanying it, this border region has incrementally transformed into a zone of indistinction in which the spatial concepts of inside and outside interpenetrate. As exception is normalized, the logic of the camp (in Agamben's sense) tends to become a dispositif. Exceptional routines are being exercised in this border region both to (re)construct the figure of the Kurd as a citizen and to generalize the domain of the camp, while also producing bare life in the context of counterterrorism. However, the Kurd as a subject cannot be ambiguously constructed, neither can the region be politically homogenized. Based on multisited fieldwork in the border city of Mardin, I claim that this zone of indistinction is simultaneously the place of revolt and resistance for the Kurdish case. Against this backdrop, the article argues the practical implications of counterterrorism policies in the region by focusing on how the state of exception is enforced on the Kurdish population as a biopolitical tool while being represented as a public spectacle to the rest of Turkey.
