3d-Printed Actuator-Based Beam-Steering Approach for Improved Physical Layer Security in Visible Light Communication

In this study, we present the design, manufacture, and implementation of a 3D-printed lens scanner-based beam steering for use in visible light communication (VLC) applications. The 5 cm x 5 cm scanner is designed for low-cost 3D printing with fused deposition modeling using polylactic acid. Scanning is facilitated through electromagnetic actuation of the lens frame, carrying a conventional 25 mm lens, from two nearly orthogonal directions. The serpentine spring that connects the lens frame to the external frame is tailored to offer similar spring constants in the directions of actuation and has minimal (<1.5 mm) sag due to the mass of the lens. The manufactured actuator was integrated on a miniaturized VLC test bed (70 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm). Using the test bed, we characterized the applied voltage versus beam displacement behavior of the actuator in the lateral plane and demonstrated beam steering on amoving target with face-recognition feedback. The proposed scheme was targeted to offer an improved security measure in VLC through tracking the legitimate receiver (i.e., via face recognition) and uses the feedback to steer the focused light onto the targeted device. The joint use of focusing and steering features allows for the legitimate receiver to roam within the room while enjoying the improved secrecy due to the focused light. We calculate the secrecy capacity for the demonstrated approach, which compares favorably with a number of jamming, spatial modulation, and beam-forming counterparts. The presented actuator can be used with larger room dimensions, yet upscaling to larger illumination units will require the use of a lens having smaller focus to address a larger total steering angle. Abortion Services at Hospitals in Istanbul

Objective: Despite the existence of a liberal law on abortion in Turkey there is growing evidence that actually securing an abortion in Istanbul may prove difficult. This study aimed to determine whether or not state hospitals and private hospitals that accept state health insurance in Istanbul are providing abortion services and for what indications. Method: Between October and December 2015 a mystery patient telephone survey of 154 hospitals 43 public and 111 private in Istanbul was conducted. Results: 14% of the state hospitals in Istanbul perform abortions without restriction as to reason provided in the current law while 60% provide the service if there is a medical necessity. A quarter of state hospitals in Istanbul do not provide abortion services at all. 48.6% of private hospitals that accept the state health insurance also provide for abortion without restriction while 10% do not provide abortion services under any circumstances. Key conclusions: State and private hospitals in Istanbul are not providing abortion services to the full extent allowed under the law. The low numbers of state hospitals offering abortions without restriction indicates a de facto privatization of the service. This same trend is also visible in many private hospitals partnering with the state that do not provide abortion care. While many women may choose a private provider the lack of provision of abortion care at state hospitals and those private hospitals working with the state leaves women little option but to purchase these services from private providers at some times subtantial costs.

Absolute Configuration and Biological Profile of Pyrazoline Enantiomers as Mao Inhibitory Activity

A new racemic pyrazoline derivative was synthesized and resolved to its enantiomers using analytic and semipreparative high-pressure liquid chromatography. The absolute configuration of both fractions was established using vibrational circular dichroism. The in vitro monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory profiles were evaluated for the racemate and both enantiomers separately for the two isoforms of the enzyme. The racemic compound and both enantiomers were found to inhibit hMAO-A selectively and competitively. In particular the R enantiomer was detected as an exceptionally potent and a selective MAO-A inhibitor (K-i = 0.85 x 10(-3) +/- 0.05 x 10(-3) mu M and SI: 2.35 x 10(-5)) whereas S was determined as poorer compound than R in terms of K-i and SI (0.184 +/- 0.007 and 0.001). The selectivity of the enantiomers was explained by molecular modeling docking studies based on the PDB enzymatic models of MAO isoforms.

Accented Essays: Documentary as Artistic Practice in Contemporary Audiovisual Works From Turkey

This article looks at the use of documentary filmmaking in contemporary artistic practices in Turkey, specifically focusing on three works that adopt a first-person, subjective viewpoint: Didem Pekun's Of Dice and Men (2016), Sener ozmen's How to Tell of Peace to a Living Dove? (2015), and Aykan Safoglu's Off-White Tulips (2013). Made by artists in transition, these films tackle themes of belonging and identity through stylistic choices proper to essayistic filmmaking, which allow these works to be regarded as accented essays. The personal questions raised through the aesthetics they employ become relevant to collective issues of culture, history, and memory, offering an alternative understanding of the social context, which was largely affected by the political events during the period in which they were made.

Activating Reflective Thinking With Decision Justification and Debiasing Training

Manipulations for activating reflective thinking, although regularly used in the literature, have not previously been systematically compared. There are growing concerns about the effectiveness of these methods as well as increasing demand for them. Here, we study five promising reflection manipulations using an objective performance measure — the Cognitive Reflection Test 2 (CRT-2). In our large-scale preregistered online experiment (N = 1,748), we compared a passive and an active control condition with time delay, memory recall, decision justification, debiasing training, and combination of debiasing training and decision justification. We found no evidence that online versions of the two regularly used reflection conditions — time delay and memory recall — improve cognitive performance. Instead, our study isolated two less familiar methods that can effectively and rapidly activate reflective thinking: (1) a brief debiasing training, designed to avoid common cognitive biases and increase reflection, and (2) simply asking participants to justify their decisions.

Acute Aortic Valve Regurgitation Secondary To Blunt Chest Trauma

Blunt injury to the cardiac valves leads to progressive acute ventricular failure which often requires urgent surgical management In this case report we describe an acute aortic valve rupture caused by air-bag inflation during an automobile accident. Laceration of an aortic valve cusp was treated successfully with urgent aortic valve replacement. A concomitant orthopedic injury was treated electively 15 days after cardiac surgery. Acute aortic valve rupture is a very rare complication of blunt chest trauma. We discuss how to diagnose and manage this potentially catastrophic event.

Adaptive Sampling Noise Mitigation Technique for Feedback-Based Quantum Algorithms

Inspired by Lyapunov control techniques for quantum systems, feedback-based quantum algorithms have recently been proposed as alternatives to variational quantum algorithms for solving quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems. These algorithms update the circuit parameters layer-wise through feedback from measuring the qubits in the previous layer to estimate expectations of certain observables. Therefore, the number of samples directly affects the algorithm's performance and may even cause divergence. In this work, we propose an adaptive technique to mitigate the sampling noise by adopting a switching control law in the design of the feedback-based algorithm. The proposed technique can lead to better performance and convergence properties. We show the robustness of our technique against sampling noise through an application for the maximum clique problem.

Adverse selection in cryptocurrency markets

In this article we investigate the influence that information asymmetry may have on future volatility, liquidity, market toxicity, and returns within cryptocurrency markets. We use the adverse-selection component of the effective spread as a proxy for overall information asymmetry. Using order and trade data from the Bitfinex exchange, we first document statistically significant adverse-selection costs for major cryptocurrencies. Also, our results suggest that adverse-selection costs, on average, correspond to 10% of the estimated effective spread, indicating an economically significant impact of adverse-selection risk on transaction costs in cryptocurrency markets. Finally, we document that adverse-selection costs are important predictors of intraday volatility, liquidity, market toxicity, and returns.
Aging and Robotization: the Duality Between Generations and Robot Adoption

This paper examines the bilateral relationship between the robot adoption and the age characteristics of the employment. The study analyzes the reciprocal effects of robotization on different generations and presents the analysis of the effects of age groups on the robotization of countries. Based on an instrumentalization of the System GMM estimation method of a dynamic panel dataset of 28 selected countries over 2004 and 2016, the results show that the number of young workers is affected negatively from robotization, whereas there is a positive impact of robot adoption on old workers. Evidence further suggests that robotization is triggered by the density of young workers in the workforce of the country.

Analysis of the Patients and Physicians Connection Network on an Online Health Information Platform

Social network applications have gained popularity in the health domain as they bring health information seekers (patients and alike) and medication advice providers (physicians and other relevant actors) together. By employing a network science perspective this research is aimed to understand an information network establishing connections among and between information seekers and providers. We found that such a connection network surfaces most of the essential characteristics of a typical complex network. Furthermore a detailed structural analysis shows some intriguing relations and connection behaviours in the network. Implications of the findings are discussed from the perspectives of medical informatics and social network analysis.

Antifungal Screening and in Silico Mechanistic Studies of an In-House Azole Library

Systemic Candida infections pose a serious public health problem with high morbidity and mortality. C. albicans is the major pathogen identified in candidiasis; however, non-albicans Candida spp. with antifungal resistance are now more prevalent. Azoles are first-choice antifungal drugs for candidiasis; however, they are ineffective for certain infections caused by the resistant strains. Azoles block ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting fungal CYP51, which leads to disruption of fungal membrane permeability. In this study, we screened for antifungal activity of an in-house azole library of 65 compounds to identify hit matter followed by a molecular modeling study for their CYP51 inhibition mechanism. Antifungal susceptibility tests against standard Candida spp. including C. albicans revealed derivatives 12 and 13 as highly active. Furthermore, they showed potent antibiofilm activity as well as neglectable cytotoxicity in a mouse fibroblast assay. According to molecular docking studies, 12 and 13 have the necessary binding characteristics for effective inhibition of CYP51. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations of the C. albicans CYP51 (CACYP51) homology model's catalytic site complexed with 13 were stable demonstrating excellent binding.

Apolipoprotein B Gene Variants Are Involved in the Determination of Blood Glucose and Lipid Levels in Patients With Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus

We have examined the frequency of the EcoRI XbaI and MspI RFLPs of the apolipoprotein B (apo 13) gene in I 10 type 2 diabetic patients and 9 1 healthy control subjects in order to ascertain whether variation in this gene may influence the development of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes). Serum lipids including total-cholesterol (T-Chol) triacylglycerol (TAG) apolipoprotein E (apo E) apolipoprotein Al (apo Al) apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) were analysed. Genomic DNA was extracted and the apo B polymorphic regions amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. Regions carrying EcoRI XbaI and MspI restriction sites present in the apo B gene were amplified and digested separately by the respective enzymes. No significant difference for genotypic frequencies was observed for the EcoRI XbaI and MspI restriction sites in type 2 diabetic patients as compared to controls. Type 2 diabetic patients and controls with EcoRI +/+ and XbaI +/+ genotypes had higher apo E levels. The MspI +/+ genotype is more frequent in the patient and control groups With elevated T-Chol. Furthermore the EcoRI -/- XbaI -/- and MspI +/+ genotypes were found to be significantly more frequent in type 2 diabetic patients with higher blood glucose levels. This study identifies the apo B gene polymorphisms in modulating plasma lipid/lipoprotein and glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Copyright 0 2005 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Application of Epidemic Models To Phase Transitions

The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) and Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) models describe the spread of epidemics in a society. In the typical case, the ratio of the susceptible individuals fall from a value S-0 close to 1 to a final value S-f, while the ratio of recovered individuals rise from 0 to R-f = 1 - S-f. The sharp passage from the level zero to the level R-f allows also the modeling of phase transitions by the number of "recovered" individuals R(t) of the SIR or SEIR model. In this article, we model the sol-gel transition for polyacrylamide-sodium alginate (SA) composite with different concentrations of SA as SIR and SEIR dynamical systems by solving the corresponding differential equations numerically and we show that the phase transitions of "classical" and "percolation" types are represented, respectively, by the SEIR and SIR models.

Assesment of soft error sensitivity of power flow analysis

Today's power systems are large and interconnected to each other with many buses, lines, loads, and generators. Even the solution of a single snapshot of the system for specific conditions requires the solution of systems of equations with large sizes. Thus, to obtain the results in a reasonable time for large problems like electrical power flow simulations, modern large computational environments should be employed. However, because of the increasing number of components in the modern computational environment, the possibility of soft errors also increases. Soft errors can be defined as failures arising from several fluctuations due to x-rays, cosmic particle effects, etc. These types of errors usually appear at any time of computation as a bit-flip in any floating-point operations. In this paper, we will investigate the soft-error effects on large-scale power flow simulations. Generally, power flow calculations are performed by using Newton Raphson Method. The system is modeled by nonlinear equations and the solution process requires a linear solver is employed to take the inverse of the Jacobian matrix at each iteration. In this study, the soft-error sensitivity of the numerical methods used in load flow was examined, and the problems that may be encountered were revealed.

The association of HLA-DRB1 alleles and MBL2 gene variant in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients

Introduction: Epidemio logic studies on pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL) have been conducted to evaluate the possible risk factors including genetic, infectious and environmental factors with the objective of idenfying the etiology. Mannose-binding lectin 2 (MBL2) plays an important role in first-line immune defense. HLA DRB1 alleles play a role in presentation of peptides to T cells and in activation of the adaptive immune response. Objective: In our study, we aimed to investigate both the MBL2 gene variant and HLA-DRB1 alleles in pediatric ALL patients. Materials: In this study, 86 high-risk ALL patients and 100 controls were included. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and PCRsequence specific primer (SSP) methods were used for detection of polymorphism of the MBL2 and HLA-DRB1 alleles, respectively. Results: The frequency of the MBL2 AB genotype was lower in female ALL patients, compared to male ALL patients (p = 0.034). An association was found between the MBL2 BB genotype and DRB1*07 and among patients with the MBL2 BB genotype; those who also carried the DRB1*07 and *04 alleles were significantly higher than those without the DRB1*07 and *04 alleles. (p = 0.048, p = 0.022, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study suggesting that the MBL2 BB genotype in association with the DRB1*07 or co-inheritance of the HLA-DRB1*04 and HLA DRB1*07 may have an impact on the etiopathogenesis of the disease.
