Abstract
The problem of representation of women in Turkish cinema, which dates back to the history of Turkish cinema itself, persists given that the social value attached to women is unchanged. In this study, I determine the social roles attached to the women characters of the movie. To this end, I analyze some women characters in the Nuri Bilge Ceylan movies Distant (2002), Climates (2006) and Three Monkeys (2008) and I write a screenplay named The Town. The location for The Town is chosen to be a medium-sized Anatolian town. The town, populated with people who identify themselves as conservatives, has a patriarchal social structure accompanied with dirty relationships and gossip. The audience witnesses the transformation of the protagonist Hakan, who is appointed to the town from a big city as a teacher, as well as his wife Arzu and son Hakan, and their gradual degeneration. I conclude, through the analysis of the screenplay and aforementioned movies, that the movies contain socially stereotyped women characters who internalized their roles, not unlike the daily lives of majority.
