Abstract
Hüsrev Paşa Mosque complex is situated in the Orta Kapı district in the city of Van. The complex lies 110 m north of the Central Gate and to the right of the building known as "Paşa Sarayı". The mosque and its complex were built by Köse Hüsrev Mehmed Paşa, governor of Van and vezir to Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The institutions belonging to the mosque complex consist of the founder's tomb, medrese (college), children's school and a guest house. The complex was badly damaged and looted following the 1915 Ottoman-Russian War. After Van was restored to the Ottomans in 1918 the old city was abandoned and the inhabitants moved to a new site 9 km to the east. This led to the Hüsrev Paşa Mosque and complex deteriorating at a still greater rate.Conservation and restoration work on Hüsrev Paşa Mosque and Tomb were carried out in 1970, 1996-2000 and most recently in 2007. The physical, chemical and biological causes of deterioration of the stone carving, tiling and fresco decoration have been separately examined.
