Conference Object Acoustic Design Guidelines for Adults With Intellectual Disability(European Acoustics Association EAA, 2014) Şaher, Konca; Nijs, Lau; Hordijk, TruusThis paper concentrates on the acoustic design aspects of the living rooms in institutions for adults with intellectually disability. In the living rooms for adults with ID there is even a higher stress on the acoustics since they are more dependent on the acoustical environment compared to normal population. Moreover prevalence of hearing impairment among adults with ID is around 30% and in most cases it is not even recognised. Therefore the rooms for adults with ID need to be designed by taking into account the requirements of the hearing impaired. They need more favourable room acoustics to improve their communication and participation. This paper investigates three main themes: 1) Investigation of impact of building design tools on acoustical quality parameters and determination of most appropriate acoustical quality indicator that translates best into architectural practice for living rooms for adults with ID. 2) Investigation of the relation between user satisfaction and absorption amount in rooms for adults with ID by listening tests prepared from auralizations. 3) Development of architectural/acoustical design guidelines to provide optimal absorption amount for living rooms for adults with ID.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 7Border as "zone of Indistinction": the State of Exception and the Spectacle of Terror Along Turkey's Border With Syria(Sage Publications Inc, 2018) Tuncer-Gürkaş, EzgiTurkey's border with Syria today is a laboratory in which biopolitics and the spectacle coincide in new ways. As a consequence of the ongoing war between the state and Kurdish insurgents, and the state of emergency accompanying it, this border region has incrementally transformed into a zone of indistinction in which the spatial concepts of inside and outside interpenetrate. As exception is normalized, the logic of the camp (in Agamben's sense) tends to become a dispositif. Exceptional routines are being exercised in this border region both to (re)construct the figure of the Kurd as a citizen and to generalize the domain of the camp, while also producing bare life in the context of counterterrorism. However, the Kurd as a subject cannot be ambiguously constructed, neither can the region be politically homogenized. Based on multisited fieldwork in the border city of Mardin, I claim that this zone of indistinction is simultaneously the place of revolt and resistance for the Kurdish case. Against this backdrop, the article argues the practical implications of counterterrorism policies in the region by focusing on how the state of exception is enforced on the Kurdish population as a biopolitical tool while being represented as a public spectacle to the rest of Turkey.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 9Collaborative Design of an Active Learning Classroom With High School Students and Teachers(EMERALD GROUP PUBLISHING LTD, 2020) Kepez, Orçun; Ust, SelinPurpose - The aim of this study is to understand classroom settings desired by high school students and teachers in an active learning classroom. The research question is whether students and teachers will differ from each other when designing an active learning classroom. Design/methodology/approach - In an effort to design a learning environment for an advanced placement programme, action research methodology was followed by conducting a participatory workshop in a real active learning classroom with future users. Working in isolation from one another, students and teachers designed their own classrooms by forming different learning centres. During the study, two groups, made up of ten high school students and seven teachers, respectively, were asked to arrange the furniture in an active learning classroom. The groups were free to form as many furniture arrangement configurations as they wished and were asked to write about their workshop experiences afterwards. Once they had completed both tasks, their plan layouts were examined. Findings - All of the plan layouts were found to fall into one of three categories: a traditional layout, a small group layout or a single large group layout. The written texts were also analysed, which revealed different perspectives of each participating group. As students and teachers explore different learning opportunities, they appear to be driven by different kinds of experiences when they endeavour to organize their classrooms. Among many indoor positioning technologies we chose Wi-Fi BLE beacon and ultra-wide band (UWB) sensor technologies for their popularity and investigated their applicability in BM. We tested three technologies for error ranges and found an average error of 1.39 m for Wi-Fi in a 36 m(2) test area (6m x 6 m) 0.86 m for the BLE beacon in a 37.44 m(2) test area (9.6 m x 3.9 m) and 0.24 m for ultra-wide band sensors in a 36 m(2) test area (6 m x 6 m). We simulated the applicability of these error ranges for real-time locations by using a behavioral dataset collected from an active learning classroom. We used two UWB tags simultaneously by incorporating a custom-designed ceiling system in a new 39.76 m(2) test area (7.35 m x 5.41 m). We considered 26 observation points and collected data for 180 s for each point (total 4680) with an average error of 0.2072 m for 23 points inside the test area. Designing as an activity captures all these various fields. Design refers basically to a problem solving method a creative problem solving approach and relevant processes. Design as an activity has always been considered as a creative tool. Design education mainly focuses on enhancing creative approaches with various 2D and 3D project based basic design studies. As the tools of designing developed in parallel with technology the core structure of the education is based on a model with creative and analytical aspects: Designerly way of thinking aims at originality and uniqueness. Today the need for innovation has become more evident than ever. The main purpose of the paper is to explore and to identify the relationship between creativity innovation and design related to design education. Bruno Munari(Milano 1907-1998) as a designer and a design educator is one of the prominent names reflecting innovation and creativity in the history of Italian Design. His innovative contribution to Italian Design is reinforced by his experimental design educator background in research for creativity. The paper aims at exploring the educational structures through history of design and design education that leads to creative thinking and nurture sustainable innovation through the case study of Bruno Munari's works as a designer and as an educator. One of us experienced the effects of Facebook on freshmen while the other examined it with sophomores and juniors. Our analysis of the data focused on the content of students' posts on Facebook groups informal student interviews our experiences in studios and our reflective cross-evaluation. Our comparative analysis showed that Facebook better serves as a boundary object in the later years of design education. The freshmen and partly sophomore were not able to make effective use of this medium for exchanging knowledge. From the perspective of SoTL this study not only helped us to experiment ways of advancing our pedagogy but also served as a platform for us to discuss and exchange knowledge on teaching and learning that is taking place in studio.Other Citation - Scopus: 7Filling an Urban Void as a ‘public Interior’ in Balıkesir; Contemporary Intervention Into Historic Context Through Interior Space(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2017) Çetin, MuratThe paper argues the role of interior spaces in linking with the urban open space configuration. The interior space is discussed as extensions of urban spaces and urban spaces as extensions of interiors with specific reference to a case study selected in Balıkesir urban fabric. Under the light shed by these discussions, the paper questions the certainty of boundries between exterior and interior, thus between interior design and architecture. While the first axis of discussion focuses on the duality between interior and exterior, the second axis of discussion concentrates on the insertion of new and contemporary architectural and spatial features into an existing and historic context. The Museum and Library of Photography project in Balıkesir, which is selected as case study, is based on a VOID connecting what exists with what disappeared long ago in a totally new combination. Consequently, paper shows that architectural identity of the existing (and sometimes disappeared) heritage is reproduced via injection of this new hybrid (interior-exterior) into the very heart of the existing urban fabric. As a theoretical introduction, HITs are first diagrammatically presented using a taxonomy of 20 different radial prisons. Using this analysis, a generative algorithm that transforms plan connectivity to a simple sequential numeric representation is developed. This method is applied as an architectural plan generator that is parametrically explored using graphs as building skeletons with configurable wing typologies. The aim of the paper is to lay the foundation of a new graph-based approach for the morphogenetic study of symmetry in architectural plans.Conference Object London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games-Acoustic Design Aspects of Temporary Venues(European Acoustics Association EAA, 2014) Şaher, Konca; Cahill, BenThis paper concentrates on the acoustic design aspects of the Temporary Venues at London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project needed integration of individuals from various different client groups consultants and contractors into one team to work in a multi-disciplinary way. Atkins-Acoustics Noise and Vibration Consultancy worked with venue design team project managers sustainability consultants from London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and architects. The keywords for Temporary Venues are absence of legacy and sustainability. There are over 120 of Temporary Venues spread throughout London and other parts of UK. The acoustic analysis strategy had two main components: Noise to the environment and noise to the venue. Noise to the environment included baseline noise survey of the site in comparison to the 3D modelling of the venue for construction games and demolition phases. Noise to the venue included setting acoustic criteria for each component sound insulation reverberation time calculations public address and voice evacuation design and mechanical plant noise control.Article Luleburgaz Train Station at the Turn of the Twentieth Century(Middle East Technical Univ, 2011) Erkan Kösebay, YoncaThe literature on the architecture of the Ottoman railway buildings is highly limited. In terms of architectural history the data presented here gathered through original documents at archives and personal collections is especially significant. In this paper five original drawings are introduced. Based on these documents information on the construction techniques plans and materials of the railway buildings are revealed. It is also understood that in this particular period of time several revisions were made in the original plan(ning) of the station such as the lodgments which were added for new officers. In that sense this paper illuminates the stratified history of the railway construction in the Ottoman Empire through one particular example. The original documents presented here vary in scale (from 1/25000 to 1/100) which makes it possible to deduce information from the level of urban scale to the level and scale of materials in concern. Other than the drawings hand written notes on these plans provide momentous data concerning the railway history.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2The Making of the 'new Woman': Narratives in the Popular Illustrated Press From the Ottoman Empire To the New Republic (1890-1920s)(Routledge Journals, 2019) Hiz, GürbeyThe genre of social narrative was prominent in the printed press of the Ottoman Empire to the early Republic of Turkey (1850s-1920s). The ideological narratives disseminated through the periodical press were influential in the establishment of a new, changing society and social space. Starting in the second half of the nineteenth century, both male and female writers debated the position of women within the changing public setting. Various articles by various authors with various aims constructed multiple imaginations of the 'new woman' by the 1930s. The shifting concepts of womanhood entered the public debate with articles on the modern woman versus the women of the past and discussions on what makes a modern woman. Articles in newspapers and political magazines of the era debated the equality of the new woman in the public sphere. In contrast to them, popular almanacs brought the discussion of womanhood into the domestic space. Turkish-language almanacs contained effectual narratives of the culture of domesticity that helped to imagine and establish multiple modes of new womanhood interwoven with the notion of the home. This article attempts to trace the ideas of the "new woman" and the culture of domesticity that were used particularly in the illustrations found in three different Turkish-language almanacs specifically aimed at female readers in the 1920s, by discussing them as visual narratives.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Metamorphic Leaves(Mıt Press, 2020) Gökmen, SabriThis article introduces an algorithm influenced by Goethe's concept of metamorphosis capable of generating a wide range of parametric leaf forms. Metamorphosis is defined as alternating stages of expansion and contraction that are observable during the development of flowering plants. This principle is extended toward leaf morphology, where two main developmental trajectories are outlined. By formulating simple two-dimensional geometric rules, the author tests the concept of metamorphosis on parametric leaf forms.Article Mountain Bike Venue Test Event Noise Assessment London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games(Studıo D-Akustika Sro, 2016) Şaher, KoncaThis article reports the results of the noise monitoring during the London 2012 Mountain Biking Test Event which was held at Hadleigh Farm. The noise monitoring was held during the Mountain Bike Test Event for two purposes: Firstly as part of the requirements of Environmental Management Plan for the Test Event to ensure that no noise disturbance was being caused and the noise levels were below the agreed criterion of 65 dB(A) at the noise sensitive receptors during the Test Event and secondly to check whether any additional mitigation measures need to be adopted for the main Olympic Event. The noise monitoring results indicate that the L-Aeq noise levels at the selected two noise sensitive receptors were below the 65 dB(A) criterion. The results confirmed the predictions that the crowd noise was not a noise nuisance during the Test Event and the results further showed that no noise nuisance at the noise sensitive receptors was caused by public adress system. The public address system to be used during the main event was very similar to the Test Event therefore it was possible to conclude that the noise nuisance from the event (public address system and spectator noise) could be assessed as being moderate to low risk during the main Games.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 49Noise Annoyance During Covid-19 Lockdown: a Research of Public Opinion Before and During the Pandemic(Acoustical Society of America, 2020) Şentop Dümen, Ayça; Şaher, KoncaStrict lockdown strategies to stop the spread of COVID-19 have caused a decrease in environmental noise levels and introduced new noise conditions in dwellings. The present study has investigated the impact of the forced lockdown in Turkey on noise annoyances due to traffic, neighbors, and personal dwellings, as well as the concern of being heard by neighbors, and overall dwelling satisfaction in an online questionnaire. The stress and anxiety levels of respondents were also investigated. The survey obtained 1053 respondents. Additionally, environmental noise levels were measured over 24-h at two locations and compared with results before the pandemic. The results clearly exhibit that environmental noise levels and annoyance due to the noise levels dropped significantly. The annoyance drop was larger in previously noisier environments than previously tranquil locations. Noise annoyance due to neighbor noise did not change significantly; however, noise annoyance due to one's own dwelling increased. The results also confirmed an overall increase in dwelling satisfactions indicating a correlation between dwelling satisfaction and lower environmental noise levels. Although the results confirmed that noise annoyance was positively correlated with stress and anxiety levels, the change of annoyance between before and during lockdown was shown to be independent from the stress and anxiety levelArticle Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11Railway Heritage of Istanbul and the Marmaray Project(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2012) Erkan Kösebay, YoncaThis study explores the significance of Istanbul's railway heritage and discusses the criteria for evaluating the historical importance architectural value and social issues surrounding the city's rail system leading into an examination of the consequences of the Marmaray Project. The Marmaray Project is a commuter rail system designed to unify Istanbul's two independent rail transportation systems and it will connect Halkali on the European side with Gebze on the Asian side of the city. With the beginnings of rail construction in the 1870s the waters of the Bosphorus separated the Oriental Railway on the European side from the Anatolian and the Baghdad Railway preventing a direct connection between Europe and Asia. The Marmaray Project will actualize this universal long desired dream via an under water tunnel. However the design of the project bears significant risks for the city's railway heritage dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries. At risk are structures used by travelers lodgings ateliers depots water closets (WC's) underpasses retaining walls bridges and old trees.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Rediscovering Goethe's Concept of Polarity: a New Direction for Architectural Morphogenesis(Middle East Technical University, 2020) Gökmen, SabriThis paper will introduce Goethe's concept of polarity to discuss its theoretical and computational implications on natural and architectural morphogenesis (1). Polarity, as a dualist principle, is found in most of Goethe's body of works, particularly in his treatise on colour and botanical writings. This concept is explored from a morphogenetic perspective to reconsider Goethe's engagement with natural sciences during Enlightenment where he transfers his ideas on form and growth to architecture. In the first part, morphogenesis as a concept for the study of organic growth is discussed that combines modern research in biology and architecture. In the second part, Goethean morphology as a unified science founded on polar principles is presented to discuss a historical perspective to morphogenesis. Here, Goethe's concept of metamorphosis is highlighted as a principle founded on polarity, formulated with alternating cycles of expansion and contraction. These concepts are explicated using an algorithmic study of leaf development to discuss its morphogenetic application to the study of form and growth in natural morphogenesis. In the last part, Goethe's morphological views are extended towards architecture within the framework of organicism where his ideas on the polarity are directed towards the aesthetic reception and formal development of the built environment. Comparing the form of two Gothic cathedrals, Laon and Noyon, the paper will offer a developmental model based on the concept of metamorphosis as an alternative trajectory for morphological research in architecture.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 1Rewriting History: Interpreting Heritage in Saint Petersburg and Istanbul(Taylor and Francis, 2019) Erek, Ayşe NurOur chapter analyses the paradoxes of reconstructing and reinterpreting architectural heritage, with a focus on the phenomenon of disappearing history. We argue: In the process of multiplication of actors involved in the reconstruction and reinterpretation of heritage sites, history and historical facts are playing a dwindling role. Using two case studies—Degtyarnyy Lane, a former tram station and park in Saint Petersburg, and the Emek Cinema building and Roma Garden in Istanbul, both of which are signifiers of the overall changes in Istanbul’s central Beyoğlu district after the 2000s—this chapter investigates how the multiplication of actors affects, on the one hand, the production of new histories of the highlighted heritage sites, and how this process leads to the disappearance of history in these cities; and on the other hand, how ‘rewriting’ the histories of these sites through heritage production affects the growing securitization around these sites and thereby access to them. Which social groups are included and which are excluded from these newly recreated places and sites and their ‘historical’ narratives? The analysis takes into account the strong spatio-temporal interplay in urban heritage sites.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Room Acoustic Modelling of a Reverberation Chamber(German Acoustical Society (DEGA), 2016) Şaher, Konca; Nas, Sezin; Karaböce, Baki; Kırbaş, Cafer; Bilgiç, EyüpThis paper aims at comparing measured broadband reverberation time values in the reverberation chamber of Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey - National Metrology Institute (TUBITAK-UME) in Gebze Turkey with the simulated reverberation time values from the room acoustical modelling of the same reverberation chamber. The reverberation chamber in TUBITAK-UME has a volume of 263m3 total inner surface area of 262 m2 and 16 diffusers made of Plexiglas and hung randomly in the room. The majority of the diffusers have hyperbolic shapes. There are also six absorbers to adjust the reverberation time of the room. Indications of difficulties in the calibration of the acoustic model with reference to the measured values and different frequencies are given and the modelling and measurement uncertainties and limitations are discussed. © 2016 German Acoustical Society (DEGA).
